SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,891, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed January 19, 1897. Serial No. 619,725. (No model.)

Beit known that I, Ki'rrrn CANFIELD HOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. n

This invention relates to bed-bottoms, and has for its object to provide a simple, light, compact, and flexible bed-bottom which may be readily attached to and detached from the frame of a bed and which when in place is adapted to support persons of different weights with equal facility, the, said bed-bottom being adapted, by reason of its construction, to accommodate itself to different weights.

The various objects and advantages ofthe invention will appear more fully in the ensuing description. v

The invention consists in a spring bed-bot tom embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the improved bed-bottom shown applied to a bed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. a detail perspective View showing one end of the spring bed-bottom and also showing the adjacent head-board, together with the means whereby the bed-bottom is detachably supported on the bed-frame.

The improved bed-bottom contemplated in this invention comprises a substantially rectangular frame l, composed,'preferably, of a metal rod 2, bent into the required shape and having its opposite ends united in any convenient manner. Within the open center of this frame are mounted a plurality of rings 3, composed of wire of the necessary gage, said rings being arranged in longitudinal and transverse rows extending substantially at Fig. 3 is right angles to each other and connected in such rows by means of links 4. The marginal rows of rings are connected to the adjacent side and end bars of the frame l by means of other links 5, as' shown. This constitutes the spring bed-bottom, or,'rather, the detachable portion thereof, and it will be seen that the same is very light and portable and that the same is also extremely compact, thereby rendering the same especially valuable for storage and transportation. At the same time the bed-bottom is perfectly open and prev cludes the hiding of vermin therein, as no crevices are offered in which the same may conceal themselves.

In order to supportthe bed-bottom with relation to the bed-frame, I provide at each end of the bed-frame a transverse rod 6, having its opposite ends bent to form eyes '7 for the reception of bolts 8, which pass through said eyes and also through the head or footvboard of the bed, as the case may be, where they receive upon their outer projecting ends nuts 9,**by means of which the bolts may be adjusted for placing the rod 6 at the required distance from the head or foot board of the bed to agree with the length of the spring bedbot-toml.

lOdesignates a series of spring-clips, two or more of which are placed upon each rod 6. Each of these clips is composed of a piece of resilient wire which is bent at its central portion to form a hooked loop 1l, which opens upward to partially embrace and engage one of the end bars of the bed-bottom. The terminals of the wire are then extended toward the rod 6 and coiled one or more times around said rod, after which the terminals are extended between said rod and the head or foot board of the bed, Where they are secured to the inner surface of such board by means of staples or other suitable fasteners 12. By reason of the coils 13 of the spring-clips the said clips are adapted to yieldingly support the bed-bottom, thus adding to the comfort of the person lying thereon.

By means of the construction above described a very simple and comfortable bedbottom is provided which will accommodate itself to both heavy and light persons.

The bed-bottom is also extremely light and compact and may be lifted from its position ICO or placed upon a bed by any one with the least possible exertion.

The bed-bottom is also thoroughly hygienic, heilig especially adapted for use in hospitals, in berths on boats, in cars, or in tenements.

By making one of the end rods 6 adjustable the shrinking or expansion of the bedstead may be compensated for.

It will thus be understood that the bed-bottoni and its supporting means are susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction, which may accordingly be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. The combination with a bed-frame, of

rods or bars secured to the inner surfaces thereof, spring-clips arranged at spaced intervals on said rods, and a bed-bottom detachably mounted and yieldingly supported upon said clips, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a bed-frame, of a rod or bar extending along the inner surface of the head or foot board thereof, bolts adjustably securing said rod to the board,and springclips mounted upon said rod and adapted to detachably engage and yieldingly support a bed-bottom, substantially as described.

3. The combination with the head or foot board of a bed, of a rod extending along the inner surface thereof and having its ends bent to form eyes, bolts passing through said eyes and connected to said board and providing for the adjustment of said rod toward and awayfroin the board, and spring-clips mounted upon said rod and adjustable therewith and adapted to detachably engage and yieldingly support a bed-bottom, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a bed-frame and a bed-bottom, of a rod extending along the inner surface of the bed-frame, and clips arranged at spaced intervals on said rod, each of said clips being composed of spring-wire Y provided with coils embracing said rod, the terminals of the wire being secured to the bedframe and the central portion of the wire bent to form a hooked loop for detachably engaging and yieldingly supporting the bed-bottom, substantially as described.
