ADAM HORN, oE EATAvIA, NEw YORK.
BERRY-CARRI ER.
srEcIrIcA'rIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,889, dated November 16, 1897.
Application tiled December 28, 1896. Serial No. 617,194. (No model.)
have invented certain new and useful Im' provements in Berry-Carriers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in crates, and has more particular relation to knockdown crates for carrying fruit-boxes.
This invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the crate embodying my invention extended ready for use, and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same in its closed position.
A in the drawings represents the handle, B the supporting-arms, pendent therefrom, and O O the hinged apertured supports. i The said handle A and pendent arms B are formed of a single integral piece of wire bent at its upper end into a loop a and having its lower ends bent outward and downward to form said arms B, one of said ends being bent horizontally at its lower end and provided with a hook b, adapted to engage and lock into a hook b', formed upon the end of the remaining rod or support. The loop a is held rmly in position and braced by a cross-piece a',hav ing a dip or notch o2 near its middle. pendent rods B are connected at intervals by cross-strips c,suitably secured thereto. Each of the box-supports O comprises aloop c,hav ing eyes c2 formed at its opposite ends, said eyes being adapted for the reception of the rods c, whereby the box-supports may be turned up or down at will. Eachof said supports C is also provided with a cross-bar c3 and a partition-bar o4, connecting said latter bar and the outer portion of the loop. These two latter bars c3 and c4 divide the support into two apertured supports c5 and c6, respectively, which are adapted to receive and hold the usual berry-boxes. The said supports C are connected at their outer ends by vertical bars D, formed of two strands of twisted wire,
provided at intervals with eyes cl, adapted to l 'vided with hooks d', said hooks being adapted to be hooked over the bar a' and rest in thel notch a2 for supporting the supports C in horizontal positions.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that when said hooks CZ are hooked over the bar o upon opposite sides they thus support the top supports, while these supports iu turn support the remaining portions C by means of the connecting-rods I). It will also be observed that by unhooking the hooks cl the said portions O maybe turned either up or down against the rods B, and thus folded into a very compact form, so that the device may be readily carried about from place to place or stowed away in any couvenient corner.
Myim proved crate is very sim ple and cheap in construction and at the same time is very light, so that it requires very little effort to carry it about with boxes of berries applied therein.
It will further be observed that by the employment of my invention the boxes are prevented from resting upon each other, and the fruit is thus protected and is not liable to become bruised, as is ordinarily the case when the boxes rest directly one upon the other.
I preferably provide the handle A with a wooden grip to prevent the same injuring the hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl l. In a box crate or support, the combination with a suitable handle having pendent supporting-rods, of apertured box-supports hinged on said rods, and hook-bars connected to said supports and adapted to hook over the handle to hold the supports in a horizontal operative position or permit them to descend to close the device, substantially as described.
top frames and adapted to engage the handle, whereby all of said frames are supported in a horizontal position, but are capable of being doubled up or down against the supportingarm, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribzo ing Witnesses.
ADAM HORN.
