T. HMSTORTS.
BURGLAR ALARM.
No. 593,136. Patented Nov! 2,189?
UNITED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
THOMAS H. STORTS, OF VAN BUREN, INDIANA.
BU RGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,136, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed August 16, 1897.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. STORTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Van Buren, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to burglar alarms adapted for use in dwellings, stores, and other places; and its object is to provide an improved construction whereby when a burglar steps upon the same or disturbs it in any way an alarm will be sounded at any point desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a burglaralarm constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, the platform and frame being removed.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the base of the device, which may be located at any suitable point in a dwelling or store or may be embedded in the ground outside of the house at such a point or points in which it would be liable to be stepped upon by a burglar or other unauthorized person on the premises. Located above this base is a rectangular frame 2,
supported bycoiled springs 3, interposed between it and the base. The numeral et designates guide-rods secured to the base and passing through holes in said frame and also through a platform 5, secured to said frame. This platformin use should be flush with the floor or ground.
Hinged to the sides of the frame by springhinges 6 are inclined wings or flanges 7, provided with inwardly-extending Wires 8, connected with arms 9 on a wheel 10, pivoted centrally to said base. Also secured to an arm 12 of said wheel is a wire 13, leading to an electrical or other alarm located at any point desired.
The operation will be readily understood. The device is located at any point desired,
Serial No. 648,411. (No model.)
with the platform flush with the floor or ground and the wire 13 connected with an electrical or otheralarm. In case a burglar or other person should step upon the platform or otherwise disturb it the same will be depressed, throwing the inclined flanges outward, which, by means of the connectingwires, will turn the wheel 10 and, pulling upon the wire 13, will sound an alarm.
The device can be used in stores or dwellings and should be placed in proximity to the points therein in which a burglar would be most likely to go. For instance, in a store or bank it should be placed close to the safe or vault, either in front or at the side of the same.
An y number of the devices desired may be employed, and the wires 13 are so connected that an alarm will be sounded when any of the devices are disturbed.
In some instances it may be desirable to operate the alarm by electricity. In such cases the base is provided with stops similar to ordinary electric push-buttons, which are depressed by the platform when a person steps on the latter, establishing a circuit with an electric bell, which will sound an alarm.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a burglar alarm, the combination with the base, the vertically-movable platform, the hinged flanges and the coiled springs, of the rotatable wheel, the wires connected therewith and with said flanges and the wire connected with said wheel and adapted to be connected with an alarm, substantially as described.
2. In a burglar -alarm, the combination with the base, the frame, the platform, the coiled springs, the guide-rods, the inclined flanges and the spring-hinges, of the rotatable wheel, the arms thereof, the wires connected with said arms and flanges, and the wire connected with said wheel and adapted to be connected with an alarm, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. STORTS.
