To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES M. BUTCHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bill-files; and it consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by-reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bill-file shown attached to a suitable card or base. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device before the clasp is applied. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the clasp applied. Figs. 4. and 5 are sectional details, the parts being shown on a larger scale.

The device, withthe exception of the clasp, is made from a single piece of wire and comprises the base-loop5, the thumb-loop 6, the forward extension 7, terminating in an upwardly-projecting brad 7, and the forward extensionS, terminating in an eye 8. The base-loop 5 is connected with the extension ,7 by a transverse part 9. The thumb-loop 6 projects upward from the base at a suitable angle and is connected with the extension 8 by a transverse part 10, occupying a position parallel with the part 9, and 'the two loops are connected with each other byatransverse part 12, occupying a position intermediate the parts 9 and 10 and parallel with both.

A suitable clasp is applied to the parts 9, 10, and 12 to hold them tightly together and prevent their slipping out of place while the device is in use. The clasp may also be used as a means for fastening the device to the cardboard or other base.

Referring to Fig. 1, the numeral 13 designates a suitable clasp applied to the parts 9, 10, and 12 of the device. This clasp is bent outwardly to form flanges 13, whose free extremities are bent downwardly and passed through the cardboard base 14 and clenched on the opposite side, whereby the device is securely fastened to thebase.

In Fig. 3 the clasp, which is slightly different in form, is designated by the numeral 15. In this case the clasp is simply wrapped around the three transverse parts 9, 10, and 12 and fastened thereon in any suitable manner.

The extension 80f the device, carrying the eye 8, occupies aposition above the extension 7, carrying the brad 7*. Hence by pressing the loop 6 downward the eye may be raised above the point of the brad sufficiently to permit the placing of bills or similar articles of any description upon the brad. As soon as the thumb-loop is released the eye passes downward over the brad and to engagement with the articles thereon, holding them securely in place. As the loop 6 is pressed downward the transverse parts 10 and 12 are twisted, and the torsional force thus induced returns the loop to its normal position as soon as it is released or the pressure thereon ceases.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a suitable base, of a device comprising a base-loop 5, a forward extension 7 terminating in a brad, a transverse part 9 connecting the parts 5 and 7, an upwardly-projecting torsion-held thumb-loop 6, a forward extension 8 terminating in an eye through which the brad passes, a transverse part 10 connecting the parts 6 and 8, and a suitable clasp applied to the parts 9, 10 and 12, said clasp terminating in flanges bent downward and passed through the base and clenched on the under side.
