WINDOW CURTAIN AND SHADE HOLDER.

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY WARNER, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Curtain and Shade Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to window curtain and shade holders; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which may be connected with window-frames of diiferent thicknesses or sizes and which may be quickly and easily placed in position or detached from the frame whenever desired.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showingmy improvement connected with the windowframe, and Fig. 2a central longitudinal section of the holder and also of a part of the frame.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a part of the upper part of a window-frame, at 6 a part of the side thereof, and at 7 a part of the upper sash mounted therein; and in the practice of my invention I provide a combined curtain and shade holder which consists of an oblong keeper 8, which is preferably rectangular in cross-section and which is open at its lower end, as shown at 9, and the upper end of which is provided with a backwardly: I

directed arm 10,'at the outer end of which is a downwardly-directed tooth or prong 11.

The keeper 8 is provided in its outer side with an oblong slot or opening 12,and mounted in said keeper and free to slide therein is a bar 13, the lower end of which is provided with a backwardly-directed arm 14, the outer end of which is provided with an upwardlydirected tooth or projection 15. V

The keeper Sis provided at its lower end in line with the slot or opening 12 with a lug or projection 16, which consists of a shank 17,

which is formed on or secured to said keeper and which is provided with a circular head 18,

in the upper side of which is formed a vertical slot or opening 19, and secured to said keeper is a bracket 20, composed of a horizontal arm and a downwardly-directed brace 21. The'horizontal arm of the bracket is secured to the keeper 8 at 22 above the slot or opening 12, and the downwardly-directed brace 21 thereof is secured to said keeper at 23 below said slot or opening, and said bracket is provided with a segmental keeper 24, which is adapted to support a curtain-pole.

The upper outer portion of the bar 13 is provided with ratchet-teeth 25, and secured to the keeper 8 at the lower end of the slot or opening 12, as shown at 22, is a pawl 27, provided with a knob or handle 28, and the upper end of said pawl is adapted to operate in connection with the ratchet teeth 25 on the bar 13.

It will be understood that one of these devices is adapted to be connected with the window-frame at each side of the top thereof, and in practice the shade holder or pole is mounted at each end in the slots 19 in the usual manner, and the curtain-pole is supported by the brackets 20, and by means of the movable bar 13, which is mounted in the keeper 8, and the pawl 27, connected therewith, said bar may be adjusted in said keeper, so that the device may be connected with window-frames of difierent widths or thicknesses, as will be understood.

It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to produce the result for which it is intended, while being also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described window curtain and shade holder, the same consisting of an oblong hollow keeper, which is open at one end and in which is mounted a longitudinal movable rack-bar, said keeper and said rackbar being each provided with an arm by which the holder may be secured to a windowframe, said keeper being also provided in its outer side with a slot, and with a pawl which is connected therewith and operates in c011- neetion with said rack-bar, and said keeper being also provided with supports for a curtain-pole and for a shade-roller, substantially as shown and described.

2. The herein-described holder for curtains and shades, the same consisting of an oblong keeper in which is mounted a longitudinallymovable rack-bar, means connected with said keeper and operating in connection with said rack-bar for holding it in any desired position, and curtain and shade supports connected with said keeper, said keeper and said bar being also provided with arms having teeth; or'projections formed thereon, substantiallyj as shown and described. j

3. The herein-described window curtain? and shade holder, the same comprising an 0blong keeper having a projection at one end which is provided with a depending tooth, a

bar slidably mounted in said keeper; said barbeing provided with a projection having a tooth, and with a rack-bar, said-keeper being slotted adjacent to said rack-bar, and provided with a spring-pawl adapted to en- .gage said rack-bar, said keeper being also provided with a bracket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The herein-described shade-holder, comprising a keeper 8, having an arm 10, which is provided with a tooth 11; said keeper being provided with an open end 9, and a slot 12; a bar 13 having an arm 14 which is provided with a tooth 15; a lug 16, having a slot 19; a bracket 20, a pawl 27, and said bar 13, being provided with ratchet-teeth 25, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.

5. In a window curtain and shade holder, a hollow keeper provided at one end with an angular arm which is provided with a tooth, said keeper being open at the free end and being provided with a slot at the lower end of which is mounted a pawl-detent which projects upwardly and into said slot, a bar mounted in said keeper and provided witha rackbar adapted to engage said pawl-detent, said bar being provided at the lower end with an angular arm which is provided with a tooth, and a holder mounted upon said hollow keeper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
