INDEX TAB.
Patented Nov. 2, 1897.

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE H. OGDEN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
INDEX-TAB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,821, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed April 7, 1897. Serial No. 631,099. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Tabs, of which the following, with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inindex-tabs, and more especially to the means employed for protectin g the lettering or characters from Wear, all as more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved tab complete and as attached to a book-leaf. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the strengthening-band removed. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing preferred form of tab before it is applied. Fig. 4 is a section on the line a; 00 of Fig. 1. I
Like letters of reference denote like parts.
The tab A is made of any suitable material, but preferably of some textile fabric, substantially of the form shown, having the ends a, by means of which it is rigidly secured to the leaf of a book. Upon either side of the projecting portion b of this tab is printed or otherwise affixed the index-letter l3 or Whatever character is desired.
.0 represents a transparent shield, preferably of celluloid, which is lapped over the portion b of the tab A and is stitched thereto.
D represents a thin metallic band placed around the base of the portion b, and a proper tool is employed to bur such band upon the tab.
It will be observed that the portion a of the tab extends beyond the edges of the portion I), and this construction is adopted so as to bring the strain when using upon the base of the tab rather than upon the edge of the leaf, thereby rendering the leaf less liable to tear.
By providing the transparent covering or shield for the characters upon the tab such characters are prevented from being defaced or Worn, and the tab as a whole is stiffened by such shield and its retaining-band.
It is obvious that the index letter or character may be formed directly upon the edge of the book-leaf and be provided with the transparent shield and still be within the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention is An index-tab for book-leaves, consisting of a tab A, of suitable material and upon which the characters or letters are printed or otherwise affixed, a transparent protecting and stiffening shield O, over the projecting portion of said tab, and a retaining-band D, at the edge of the leaf, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of April, 1897.
GEORGE H. OGDEN.
