Be it known that 1, Ross L. MAHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Electric Light Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improved supports for electric lights designed especially for use for desk-lamps, piano-lamps, stand-lamps, reading-lamps, and wall-brackets.

The invention particularly relates to an improved device for holding an incandescent electric lamp by means of which the light may be readily and easily adjusted as may be desired.

The invention also relates to details of construction which will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.

In order that my invention may be better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a desk-light embodying my present improvements without a shade, the incandescent lamp being held in a horizontal position; Fig. 2, a front view of the same, showing the lamp with the shade in a vertical position; Fig. 3, a side view of the same, showing the lamp in a horizontal position, extending at right angles to the front of the desk and with a shade of diiferent construction; Fig. 4, a top view of Fig. 2 with the lamp removed; Fig. 5, a side view of a wallbracket embodying my present improvements; Fig. 6, a side view of a stand-1amp, showing the same on a desk with the standard elevated; Fig. 7, a detail View illustrating the position to which the standard of the lamp shown in Fig. 6 may be moved, the lamp therein being turned at right angles; Fig. 8, an enlarged detail view of the wall-bracket shown in Fig. 5, and Fig. 9 an enlarged view of the clamp shown in Fig. 6.

In all of the above views corresponding parts are designated by the same numerals of reference.

In Fig. 1 the numeral 1 represents a rod or bar made preferably of tubing secured to the top of a desk. This is preferably effected by providing a hook 2 at the rear end of the rod, which may be a continuation of the rod, and a spring-clip 3, carried on a collar 4, movable on the rod 1. A set-screw 5 looks the collar 4 at any position. If desired, a piece of rubber tubing 6 may be placed on the rod 1 to prevent the desk from being scratched. Preferably the rod 1 is prevented from turning by means of a fiat piece of metal 7, brazed or otherwise secured to the same, as shown particularly in Fig. 4.

8 8 represent spring-clips, between which the upper end of the socket 9 of the incandescent lamp 10 is held. Said clips are made preferably of spring-wire, but they may be made of spring metal of the proper width. By mak ing the clips 8 of spring-wire, however, they may be bent in the shape shown in Fig. 3, so that the socket 8 may be firmly heldthereby in a position in line with the rod 1. The spring-clips 8 8 are secured to the rod 1 in any suitable way. In Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5 I illustrate the spring-clips 8 secured to a collar 11, movable lengthwise upon the rod 1 and also capable of turning thereon, said collar being held in place by a set-screw 12. In Figs. (5 and 9 the spring-clips 8 S are secured to a plug 13, inserted into the end of the rod 1. In this modification the rod is split at its free end,as shown, and is slightly tapered, so that a nut 14 may be secured thereon,so as to compress the split end and thereby clamp the plug 13. It will be noted that with this modification the same capacity for lateral adjustment is present, but to a less extent than with the preferred form shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5.

In Figs. 2, 3, (3, and 8 the lamp 10 is provided with well-known forms of shades 15, to which I make no claim.

In Fig. 5 I illustrate means for carrying out my invention in connection with a wallbracket, wherein the rod 1 is bent into a conventional form and is secured to a rosette or other form of base 16,screwed or otherwise secured to the wall. 17 is a pivot-joint and 18 a hinge-joint interposed between the rod 1 and the rosette or base 16, whereby the lamp 10 may be swung up or downfor instance,t0 the position shown in dotted linesor from one side tothe other. 19 is a set-screw for locking the parts of the hinge 18 relatively so as to hold the lamp in any desired position.

InFig. 6 I illustrate my invention as carried out in connection with a stand-lamp shown on a desk,wherein the supporting-rod I is connected to a heavy base20 by an ordinary hingejoint 21, provided with a locking set-screw 22. \Vith this form of device the lamp 10 may be brought down to the position shown in Fig. 7, wherein it will be noted that the lamp has been turned around to occupy a. horizontal tion of a base, a rod or arm mounted on said base and capable of universal movement with 1 position. The wires 23 to the lamp are conducted thereto in any desired way, either from the Wall,ceiling,or from the desk or elsewhere.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new the-rein, and desire to-seeure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. In an electric-light supp.o-rt,,the combination of a rod or arm ,a collarrotatably mounted thereon, spring-clips carried by said collar, and an incandescent lamp supported in said spring-clips, substantially asset forth.

2. In an electric-light support,thecom bination of a supporting, rod or arm, a collar movable lengthwise thereon and capable of rotation thereon, a set-screw for locking said collar, spring-clips. secured to said collar, and an incandescent lamp held by said spring-clips, substantially as set forth.

3. In an electric-light support,the combination of a base, a rod or arm mounted on said base and capable of universal movement with respect to the same, a collar rotatably mounted on said rod or arm, spring-clips carried by said collar, and an incandescent lamp supported in said spring-clips, substantially as set forth.

4.. In an electric-light su-pport,the combinarespect to the same, a collar movable lengthwise on said rod or arm and capable of rotation thereon, aset-screw for locking said collar, spring-clips secured to said collar, and an incandescent lamp held by said spring-clips, substantially as set forth.
