UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oEEN M. DEETS, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
PAPER-HANGERS APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 591,957, dated October 19, 1897. A umion filed A ri 27,1897. Serial No. 634,101. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OREN M. DEETS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hangers Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means employed by workmen in the art of paper-hanging for the embellishment of walls and ceilings of dwellings and other buildings, and is a paper-hangers apparatus having for its objects the saving of labor and a higher degree of accuracy in the even distribution of paste upon the paper than can ordinarily be given by the most skilled workman operating under present methods. The means for efiecting these objects will appear as this specification proceeds.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view as seen from the table side of my paperhangers apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal crosssection view on the section-line 4 at of Fig. 2.
Parts are indicated by letters and similar letters refer to similar parts in all views.
At the end T of a paper-hangers table is secured a cross-piece T, overhanging the said table at its ends. Secured to the said overhang are the parallel supporting-hangers H, carrying at their lower ends the movable bearing or boxing B, the use of which will be hereinafter described. One of the said hangers H, projecting some distance lower than the other, is bent into an eye or bearing D in which is journaled the gudgeon D of the paste-roller D, partially retained in the paste-pan S, pivotally secured to a lateral lug h of the hanger H and which pan is maintained in position by the rod a hooking into the table T. The movable boxing B, before described as sliding on the hanger H, is controlled bya spiral springs, seated on'a guiderod 1), and within said movable box is journaled the sectional shaft comprising the rod p, telescoping Within the hollow rod 1), and upon which shaft is rotatably mounted the roller B, designed to hold the roll of paper and separable spools or' rollers X, the purpose of which will be later described.
Bolted'or otherwise secured to the hangers H are the flaring arms H, with eyes at their ends in which are journaled the gu'dgeons of the respective rolls R and R, whose use will be later described.
Secured beneath the cross-piece T are the depending guard-plates G, the lower ends of which are so bifurcated as to straddle and rest upon the roller B. Secured to the crosspiece T are the brackets H, journaled in which are the gudgeons of the roller R. The roller R is designed to lie in close juxtaposition to the paste-roller D, whereby the paste is evenly distributed and all lumps crushed. The rollers R and R are designed to guide the paper web, as disclosed in the operation of the device. 1
When the apparatus is in place ready for work, a roll of paper is placed on the roller B by withdrawing the telescopic sectional shaft therefrom, removing said roller B, inserting it in the paper-bolt common to wallpaper trade, then replacing the same and reinserting the said sectional shaft, and a quantity of paste. sufficient to spread itself upon the roller D in the tank S, the paste-distributing roller B being designed to evenly distribute the paste over the roller D and press out any lumps therein. The workman passes the edge of the paper between the paper-roller B and the paste-rollerD and thence under'the small roller R. It is then drawn upward passing over the small roller R. to a flat position upon the table where it is cut for hanging. The movement of the paper rotates the several rollers whereby the workman, by simply drawing his paper to him on the boards or tables, finds it ready pasted and with an exact evenness that cannot be secured by methods done by hand. So it will be seen that the work of one man is dispensed with and better results obtained. To replace a roll of paper upon the roller B, and to supply the tank S with paste, are each but the work of a moment.
What I claim is 1. A paper-hanging machine comprising a table, hangers depending therefrom, a paperroller adj ustably j ournaled to said hangers, a paste-roller also journaled to said hangers, a paste-pan supported by said hangers combined with a paste-distributing roller and guide-rollers all substantially as described.
2. A paper-hangers apparatus comprising a table, depending hangers secured thereto, a paper-roller removably and adjustably journaled thereto, a paste-roller j ournaled to said hangers, a paste-pan therefor and a pastedistributing roller combined with the paperguide rollers substantially as described.
3. A paper-l1angers apparatus comprising a table,l1angers depending therefrom,a pasteroller and a paste-distributing roller journaled to said hangers, an adjustable jou rnalbox sliding on said hangers, a telescoping sectional shaft journaled in said bearings, a paper-roller rotating on said shaft combined with a paste-pan and guide-rollers substantially as described.
4. A paper-hangers apparatus comprising atable, hangers depending therefrom, a pasteroller, a paste-distributing roller and a guideroller journaled to said hanger, a paste-pan for said paste-roller, bearings slidably mounted on the hangers, springs controlling the said sliding bearings, the sectional telescopic shaft rotating in said bearings, the roller mounted on said shaft, the depending guideplates secured to the table and resting on said roller, and the spools rotatably mounted on the sectional shaft substantially as described.
5. A paper-hangers apparatus comprising a table, hangers depending therefrom,a pasteroller, a paste-distributing roller and aguideroller journaled to said hangers, lateral lugs projecting from said hangers, a paste-pan pivotally secured to said lugs and means for tipping said pan to any desired angle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
