Description
D. J. BIGELOW.
Sleigh. Patented Oct. 30, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
1). J. BIGELOW, 0F BANE CENTRE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,167, dated October 30, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, D. J. BIG'ELU\V, of Bane Centre, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolster-Plates and Coupling-Bolts for Sleighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the rear bob of a bob-sleigh, which is constructed in any of the known and usual ways. B B represent the two bars upon the bob which support the bolster. 'c '0 represent two cast-iron plates, which are made fast upon the bars B B. These plates are made concave on their upper sides, as shown in Fig. 2, and are provided at their centers with openings, through which bolts to pass.
d 01 represent two plates, which are cast also, and which are firmly secured to the under side of the bolster. These plates are made convex on their under sides, the convexity corresponding with the concavity in the plates 0. The
plate d rests upon plate 0, as shown.
a represents a headed bolt, which passes through a slot made for it in plate d, and then through the opening in plate 0, and is confined down by means of a nut, 0, under the bar B. This bolt firmly secures the bolster down to the bars B B, but allows said bolster to oscillate by the moving of plate at in its bearingin plate 0.
Plate d is provided with flanges, which run up by the side of the bolsters and keep it in its place.
The object of this arrangement is to prevent strain of the rear bob when the body is secured upon the two bolsters of the sleigh and the sleigh is drawn over uneven ground.
It is evident that the bolster of the rear bob will oscillate so as to allow said bob to accommodate itself to the inequalities of the ground.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plates d and c and bolt a, constructed as described, and arranged with the bars B B and bolster E, as and for the purpose herein v D. J. BIGELOVV.
