SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 591,631, dated October 12, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, DAVID H. MAYEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysfield, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to bridles.

The object of my invention is to provide improved means for detachably connecting blinds to bridles, whereby the bridle may be used with or without the blinds.

It is also my object to provide a combined double box-loop and blind.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention attached to the crown-strap of a bridle and to the bitring. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the two pieces forming the box-loop and blind, said parts being detached and assembled. Figs. 4 and5 are detail views. Fig. 6 is a modification.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A denotes a sheet-metal blind having a flange a formed on its rear edge.

13 denotes a sheet-metal blank forming a box-loop, which is rigidly secured to said blind, forming a double loop. Said box-loop may be closed in, as shown in Fig. 6, or be formed with upper and lower loops 17?) on each side of the blind, which is the preferred form. Fig. 4 shows the blank B, from which the preferred form of box-loop is made. It is provided with a central slot 6 and wings I) b, formed integral therewith and bent to form the loops 1) b, as shown in Fig. 1. Said blank is made of thin sheet metal and is soldered to the rear edge of the blind, the flange (6 being first set in the slot 5 The wings are then bent to form the loops 1) b and their ends soldered to the sides of the blind. The box-loop and blind are thus held firmly together, forming a double box-loop or a boxloop upon each side of the blind.

It is evident, as shown in the modification in Fig. 6, that instead of forming the blank B with wings, forming upper and lower loops, I may close in the box-loop upon all sides.

The bridle is made with a crown-piece 0, having a ring 0 secured at its ends, to which the cheek-straps are detachably connected,

as hereinafter described, to remove and replace the blinds from the bridle.

B denotes a cheek-strap detachably secured to the ring a at its upper end and detachably secured at its lower end to a ring E, attached to the bit. The cheek-strap is detachably secured to the blind by means of the loops b b, as follows; The free end d of said strap is first passed down through the lower loop I) on the outside of the blind, then through the ring E on the bit, then up through the loops 2) on the inside of the blind, then through the loop b above it and through the ring 0-, then over the top of the blind and down through the loop 1) upon the outside, and through a buckle F, where it is made fast. In this position the buckle F rests between the loops b b, and when the cheek-strap is buckled the upper end of the buckle overlaps the loop 1) and the tongue lies against the lower edge of said loop. This is an important feature of my invention, as in this position the buckle prevents the downward movement of the blind, while the cheek-strap passing over it prevents an upward movement of the same. By this mode of fastening the blind may be adjusted lengthwise of the bridle and thus adapts the blinds for heads of varying size. Where the box-loop is closed in, sufficient space is left in the outside loop to accommodate the buckle F, as shown in Fig. 6.

WVhen it is desired to use the bridle without the blinds, the buckles F are first released from the free end of the cheek-straps and the straps and blinds detached from the bridle. Said straps are then passed through the rings in the crown-piece and bit, andserve again as cheek-straps with the blinds detached.

Having shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a bridle-blind, of a box-loop formed of a metal blank rigidly secured to the rear edge of said blind and projecting upon each side of the same, said projecting portions of the blank being bent to form loops upon each side of the blind, substantially as described.
