' E. V. BURROW.
GULTIVATOR. No. 591,589. Patented Oct. 12, 1897.
WITNESSES V INVENTOI? I Byiaw ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZEKIEL V. BU RROW, OF MONROVIA, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR TO B. M. THOMPSON & SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 591,589, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed January 6, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EZEKIEL V. BURROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monrovia, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make the frame of a single cotton-cultivator so that it will be strong, durable, and withal inexpensive, while the proper set of the toothholding cross-head with respect to the beam will always be preserved and the line of draft be always at the center of strain.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view; Fig. 2 a perspective and Fig. 3 a detail view.
In the drawings, A represents the cultivator-teeth, which may be of any preferred shape and design.
B is the beam, made of metal and provided with the usual handles 0 O, bolted together on opposite'sides of the beam and supported by the rods D D. The beam B is first bent out at b, so as to form an obtuse angle, and then bent in an opposite direction at b to form a Serial No. 612,212. on model.)
right angle or an approximation thereto. This makes the cross-head B for holding the teeth inthe requisite slant or diagonal adapted to preserve them en echelon or on a line at an obtuse angle to the line of draft.
E is a brace secured to the beam by bolts at one end and by clamps at the other end, so as to prevent any strain from changing the local relation of the cross-head to the beam.
On the cross-head B the shanks of the teeth are secured by means of the box-clamps G, which consist of the curved yoke g, the washers g, and the nuts g which screw upon the threaded ends of the yoke. The line of draft is midway between the teeth, so that the beam, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EZEKIEL V. BURROW. Witnesses: OSCAR H. THOMPSON,
CLIFFORD W. JOHNSTON.
