LOOPER MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Be it known that I, LANSING ONDERDONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suifolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in sewing-machines, more especially to the double-chain-stitch type; and the object is to provide improved means for adj ustingthe under-thread-oarrying looper whereby the distance of its loop-taking point from the needle and consequent time at which it takes the loop may be varied, or its lateral movement with respect to the needle may be changed to give greater or less sidewise throw on one side of the needle than on the other.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of so much of a sewing-machine as is necessary to illustrate the relations of the parts. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a looper-carrier constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a side View showing a slightly different form of looper-carrier. Fig. 4 is a side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a looper adapted for adjustment. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing a diagonal adjustment for the looper on the carrier.
In the drawings, A represents the sewingmachine needles, and B the under-threadcarrying looper, supported on a suitable carrier O, which, as herein shown in Fig. 1, has an oscillating and sliding movement imparted to it by an inclined crank connection with the driving-shaft of the machine, and in Fig. 3
by a crank and eccentric. This looper-car: rier O is, as shown, provided with a block D, which is formed to fit a dovetailed groove in the carrier, or the carrier may be provided with a series of holes adapted to register with a hole in the block D, or the two may haveregistering slots, and in all these instances when the block has been adjusted to its desired position setscrews E, passing through the block, are tightened and serve to hold the block securely in place. 1
The block D is provided with a socket or eye F, in which the shank G of the looper B is inserted.
If desired to secure only a lateral adj ustment of the looper, the shank thereof may be vertical, fitting in a vertical socket on the block D, but if desired tosecure an adjustment for regulating'the time of entry of the looper into the needle-loop I preferably make the socket or eye horizontal and bend'the shank of the looper so that it lies horizontally and is secured in said eye by means of a setscrew and having a flattened end to aiford a better binding-surface for the end of the screw. To adj ust thelooper lengthwise, therefore, it is necessary only to move its shank forward or back in the eye. By this means I am enabled to position the looper in its carrier so as to cause a quick or slow cooperation of the looper with the needle-loops, accordingly as long or short needles are used or the needle mechanism causes a long or short dwell of the needle.
In Fig. 6 is shown an arrangement for providing an adjustment when it is desired to arrange the looper to oscillate in a plane at an oblique angle to the plane of its carrierblock D, or other plane in which said block is vibrated, or the plane in which said block is adjustable in the looper-carrier. .'In this construction the blockD is adjustable in the manner above described on the looper-carrier O by screws E, and a second block D is adjustable upon block D by means of curved slots G and adjusting-screws G. The block D also carries a' looper-socket F, secured thereto by screws, and the stem of the looper is adjustable in said socket, as described in connection with the other figures. The curvature of the slots G and their disposition are such as to provide a relative lateral adjustment of block D of considerable extent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A looper mechanism for sewing machines comprising a looper-carrier; a block having an adjustable connection therewith; and a looper having an adjustable connection with the block, the latter adjustment being substantially at right angles to the former, substantially as described.
2. A looper mechanism for sewing -1nachines, comprising a looper-carrier; a looper supported by said carrier; and means for securing two bodily, right-line adjustments of said looper relative to its carrier, substantially at right angles to each other, substantially as described.
