a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the borough of Manhattan, State of New York, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Looper- Carriers for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvementsin looper carriers for sewing machines, and more-particularly to a looper carrier on which is supported two or more loopers.
An object of the invention is to provide a looper carrier of the above character wherein the loopers are mounted on separate supports, one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a plane at right angles to the axis of the looper carrier so that the points of the loopers may be set for proper cooperation with theirrespective needles.
A further object of the invention is to provide a looper carrier of the above character wherein the adjustable support may be shifted about the axis of the looper so that the position of the point of the looper carried thereby may be adjusted without varying the distance of said point from the axis of the looper carrier.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a looper construction in connection with a looper carrier of the above character so that said loopers may be adjusted laterally relatively to each other.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully described.

The invention consists broadly in a looper carrier on which are mounted two or more loopers, and each looper is carried directly by a separate support which is so construct.- ed and arranged that one support. may be adjusted relative to the other for varying the position of the points of the loopers relative to their respective needles. One looper may be mounted directly on the looper carrier and the looper carrier may be shifted by adjusting the length of the link which operates the same so as to properly set the point of the looper so that it will pass the needle at the right time to take the needle loop with certainty. The other looper, if two loopers are used,- is mounted on a separate support carried by the looper carrier, which separate support is capable of adjustment in a plane at right angles to the axis of the looper so that after the first looper has been properly v set to cooperate with its needle, this separate support may be adjusted and the looper mounted thereon properly set to cooperate with its needle.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have shown my invention applied to a sewing machine having a work support 1 and an overhanging arm 2 in which 1s mounted a needle bar 3 carrying two needles 4 and 5. These needles, as shown in Fig. 10, are set in a line which is diagonal to the line of the feed indicated by the arrow in said figure. A looper 6 cooperates with the needle 4 and a looper 7 cooperates with the needle 5. These loopers are mounted on a looper carrier 8 which is pivoted at 9 to a looper support 10 of the usual construction. The looper carrier 8 is swung on its axis or pivot by a link 11. This link 11 is connected to a ball stud 12 on the looper carrier and to a ball stud 13 on the needle lever extension 14. The needle lever 15 carrying the needle lever extension is oscillated by a pitman 16 which cooperates with an eccentric on the main shaft 17. This link 11 is provided with right looper t.
and left hand threads 18 so that, by turning the connecting rod of the link, said link may be lengthened or shortened, depending on the direction in which it is turned. This is a common expedient in the sewing machine art for setting the looper carrier.
The looper carrier 8 is formed with a socket 19 (see Fig. which receives the shank 20 of the looper 7. The upper portion of the looper carrier 21 which has the socket 19 formed therein is the support for this ing socket by a set-screw The looper 6 is carried by a support 23 which is adjustably connected to the looper carrier 8. As herein shown, the looper carrier has a flange 2i at its rear face, which fern-1s a bearing for the support 23. Said support has an opening 25 which receives this flange 24, as shown in Fig. 5. This flange is concentric to the axis of the carrier 8. Said support 23 is also )rovided with a slot 26 which is curved a out the center of the opening 25, and a set-screw 27 extends through said slot and is threaded into the looper carrier 8. Thesupport 23 is formed with a laterally projecting socket member 28 which receives the shank 29 ot the looper 6. This looper is especially constructed and has a shank which is horizontally' disposed. Said shank is secured to the Socket member by a set-screw 30.
In the setting up of the machine, the loopers are mounted on the separate supports 21 and 23, after which the link 11 is adjusted as to'length until the looper 7 is set so that the point thereof will pass the needle 5 in proper time to take the needle loop with certainty. After this looper has been set, then the set-screw 27 is released and the support 23 is shifted so as to bring 'the point of the looper 6 into proper cooperation with the needle 4, after which the set-screw is tightened and the looper 6 can be firmly held in this position on the looper carrier.
It will be readily seen that, if both loopers are mounted on fixed supports on the same carrier, when one is adjusted to properly cooperate with its respective needles, the other may,'as a result, be thrown out of proper cooperative relation. By my improved construction, however, both loopers may be set, using the independent supports which are adjustable relative to each other so that they will properly cooperate with their respective needles. The adjustment of the support 23 is in a plane at right angles to the axis of the looper so that any shifting of the looper to bring its point into proper cooperation with the needle may be accomplished without. any lateral shifting of the looper. Then again, it will be noted Said looper is held in its supportthat the looper support 23, when adjusted,
being disposed in the proper plane relative to' the vertical axis when the looper is cooperating with its needle, and thus the looper will with certainty perform its function.
Inasmuch as the shank 25) of the looper 6 is horizontally disposed, by loosening the set-screw of the socket. member 28 the said looper may be adjusted laterally relative to the looper 7 so that the loopers may be properly set to correspond to the distance between the needles in a direction parallel to the line of feed. By my improved looper carrier, I am, therefore. able to adjust the lateral positions of the loopers and also the position of the points of the loopers relative to their respective needles so as to bring about a proper cooperation between the loopers and the needles. If more than two loopers are used, then, of course, these supports for the additional loopers must be independently adjusted in order to carry out the spirit of the invention as set forth herein.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spiritof this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination of a pivoted looper carrier, a looper fixedto said carrier, an
adjustable support mounted on said carrier,
said support being shiftable in a plane at right angles to the axisof the looper carrier, and a looper mounted on said support and adjustable in a direction parallel to the axis of the looper support. I

A looper carrier, a looper fixed to said looper carrier, said looper carrier having a pro ecting flange concentric to the axis of the looper, a looper support having an opening which receives said flange and a slot, aset-screw passing through said slot into the looper carrier for holding the looper support in an adjusted position,.said support having a horizontal projecting socket member, a looper having a shank extending into said socket member, and a set-screw for clamping said shank to said socket member.
