LOOPER MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Be it known that I, LANSING ONDERDONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in sewing-machines, and particularly to an improvement in mechanism for supporting and operating the under-thread-carrying looper on a double-chain-stitch sewing-machine.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of so much of a flatbed sewing-machine as is necessary to a complete understanding of my invention, the cloth-plate being removed. In the drawings, A representsthe drivingshaft of the machine, actuated in the usual way and having on its outer end a collar B, provided with an inclined'projection O, in which is secured a bar or rod D. This bar or rod extends, as shown, at an inclination to the axis of the driving-shaft and is embraced between the rearwardly-extending flanges E of a looper rocking fork F, this looper rocking fork being sleeved upon and secured to the transverse shaft G. As herein shown, the bar or rod 0 passes through a fulcrum pin set in the looper rocking fork.
In other applications the loopers are shown as carried by the rocking fork, but for certain purposes I have found it desirable to arrange the looper-support or carrier separate from the fork, and, as herein shown, there is provided on the shaft Gan adjustable sleeve or collar H, having a socket for the reception of the shank of the looper, held in place by a set-screw 1. Of course this collar or sleeve may be provided with any number of sockets, and the sockets may be arranged so that the plane in which the loop-taking points lie may be at any desired angle to the line of feed. This collar is clamped on the shaft G by a suitable screw I, and by means thereof may be adjusted circumferential'ly on the shaft to vary the distance between the points of the looper and the plane of the needle, thereby varying the time at which the looper takes the loop of needle-thread, or said carrier may be adjusted in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the shaft G. If a plurality of loopers are to be used, I prefer, instead of one collar or sleeve, to provide two or more, each having a socket for the reception of a looper-shank, and by this arrangement any adjustment along the longitudinal axis of the shaft G is possible to provide for their ready adjustment in case it is desired to change the gage of the machine by arranging the needles nearer to or farther from each other.
- Various minor modifications and changes in the construction of the device may be made without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sewing-machine comprising a drivingshaft, a second shaft arranged forward of the main shaft and with its axis atright angles thereto and supported in fixed bearings on the machine-frame, an inclined crank and rocking-fork connection between the driving-shaft and the transverse shaft, and alongitudinally and circumferentially adjustable looper-support arranged on said transverse shaft independently of the rockingifork; sub stantially as described.
2. A looper mechanism for sewing-machines, comprising a looper-shaft, a plurality of looper-supports carried by said shaft, means for adjusting said supports circumferentially and longitudinally of said shaft,
loopers carried by said supports, and means for adjusting the loopers on said supports vertically and laterally, substantially as de--.-
scribed.
3. A looper mechanism for sewing-ma chines, comprising an actuating-shaft, a looper-shaft, and a looper-support, actuating mechanism for imparting to the looper-support a rocking and laterally vibrating move ment comprising a rocking fork, and means for adjusting said support independently of said fork, substantially as described.
4. A looper mechanism for sewing -1nachines, comprising an aetuating-shaft, a looper-shaft, and a looper-support, actuating mechanism for imparting to the looper-support a rocking and laterally-vibrating move- 6. A sewing-machine comprising a drivingshaft, a looper-supporting shaft mounted to slide and rock in fixed bearings on the machine-frame, means on the forward end of the main shaft for oscillating and reciprocating the second shaft comprising an inclined pin adjustably secured to the main shaft and operatively connected with the second shaft, whereby bot-h the sliding and oscillating movements of said second shaft may be varied, and a circumferentially and longitudinally adjustable clan1ping-collar arranged on said second shaft, and a looper secured thereto; substantially as described.
