To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, FRANK F. FORTNEY and THOMAS H. STEVENS, Of Ravenna, Portage county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chin-Rests and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to improvements in chin-rests designed more especially for use in dental parlors in operations upon the teeth of the patients lower jaw; and it consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a frontview of a chin-rest embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a left-hand side elevation of the same, showing the device appliedto the chin of the patient. A portion of the pad or cushion in which a plate to which the chin-rest is embedded is broken away and said plate shown in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, mostlyin central section, of a chinrest embodying our invention.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the chin-rest proper that consists, preferably, of a plate arranged to afford bearing for the under side of the chin and bent or flanged upwardly at each side, as at A, to afford lateral bearing for the chin, and bent or flanged upwardly also at the front, as at A to afford an abutment or bearing for the forward side of the chin.

In Fig. 1 a U-shaped piece G has its lower and central member swiveled at g to the upper end of arm E, and an arm or member H, bearing the chin-rest proper and,

depending from the latter, is horizontally pivoted to and between the end members of said U-shaped piece. By this construction'it will be observed that the chin-rest proper can be turned upon arm or bracket E and can also be swung forwardly-and rearwardly in a vertical plane, and hence is capable of accommodating itself to the position of the patients chin.

In Fig. 3 the arm II, that bears the chin-rest proper, is connected with the upper or rear end of arm or bracket E by means of a balland-socket joint. The socket of said joint is formed upon bracket or arm E, and the ball By this construction the chin-rest proper cannot only be turned horizontally and has a limited capability of being swung forwardly and rear.- Wardly in a vertical plane, but has also a limited movement laterally in opposite direc tions.

If desired, set-screws I, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, can be provided forsecuring the movable members of the ball-and-socket joints in the desired adjustment, and the sockets of said joints are provided withscrew-threaded holes for receiving said screws.

What we claim is- 1. The combination of a pad or cushion, a plate attached to the cushion or pad and provided with a forwardly-projecting arm or member, an upwardly and rearwardly extending armconnected with the forward end of the aforesaid forwardly-projecting member, and the chin-rest proper supported from the upper end of said rcarwardly-extending bracket or arm, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a pad or cushion, a plate attached to the cushion or pad and providcd with a forwardly-projecting member, a rearwardl y and upwardly extending laterallyswinging arm or bracket supported from the aforesaid forwardly-projecting member, and the horizontally-rotating and vertically-tilting chin-rest proper supported from the upper end of said rearwardly-extending bracket or arm, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of a pad or cushion, a plate attached to the cushion or pad and provided with a forwardly-projecting member, a rearwardly and upwardly extending arm or bracket connected, at its lower end, with the aforesaid forwardly-projecting member by means of a ball-a-nd-socket joint, the chinrest proper, an arm or piece bearing the chinrest properand supported from the aforesaid rearwardlyextending arm or bracket and connected with said bracket or arm by means of a ball-and-socket joint, substantially asshown and described.
