IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,107, dated October 23, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, W. T. WELLS, of Decatur, Macon county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Hanging of Gates, Doors, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention consists in so hanging a gate `or door, &c., that it can be adjusted either in a vertical or horizontal plane without necessarily detaching it from its hinges or removing and resetting the same, as will be obvious from the following detail description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure lis afront elevation of a gate, showing it as hung to apost according to the present invention and Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line x a0, Fig. 1.

A in the drawings represents a gate, which may be made of any desired material, style, and shape, and is hung by means of two hinges, B B, to a post, c. One wing or leaf, D, of each -hinge B is secured to the post by means of screws E, or in an y other proper manner, while in the other wing or leaf, M, of each hinge is made a horizontal slot, F, through each lof which passes a bolt, G, having a head, H, upon I one end, with a screw thumb-nut, I, upon the other, this bolt passing through a short vertical slot, J, in one of the side or cud posts K of the gate. By tightening the thumb-nuts I upon the gate, it (the gate) is firmly secured to the hinge, while by loosening the same through the medium of the two slots F and J, the one in the hinge-leaf and the other in the gate, the gate is then free to be moved either up or down, or in a horizontal orlateral direcreetion, and thus brought to any desired position with regard to the post to which it is hung, where, by tightening the thumb-screws against the same, it can be securely held and fastened, this adjustment of the gate not requiring the hinges to be disturbed orremovedv I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-l ters Patent- The slot-ted leaf M of the hinge B, in combinationl with the thumb-screw G, secured as described, and adapted substantially as and for the purpose specified.
