WAGON STEP.

MARTHA JANE LEATHERS, OF DAWSON, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 590,155, dated September 14, 1897. Application filed August 7, 1896. Serial NoA 602,056. (No model-l To a/ZZ whom t may concern: j
Be it known that I, MARTHA JANE LEATH- ERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dawson, in the county 4of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invent-ed `certain new and useful Improvements in VVagon-Steps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the` invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.`
My invention relates to wagon-steps.
My object is to provide an extremely simple and cheap step for wagons and other vehicles which will be adapted to fold into compact form against the wagon-body when not in use, but which will be adjustable and can be extended whenever desirable.
Having this object in View, my invention consists of an adjustable and foldablc wagonstep of novel and peculiar construction, as will appeal' more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying draWings,'I*`igure l is a view in side elevation, showing a wagonbody equipped with my improved step, which is folded; Fig. 2, a ci'osssectional View showing the step in the same position; Fig. 3, a side View showing the step extended; Fig. 4t, a cross-sectional View, and Fig. View showing the step extended.
The numeral 1 designates the wagon-bod y, and 2 represents a bottom cross-piece which is extended out considerably on the sides of said body. One or more of steps can bc employed: On the extension of the cross-piece there is fastened a catch-plate 3, which is fastened thereto in any preferred manner. Connected to the bottom of the cross-piece is a locking-plate 4, which projects out toward the front and rear of the wagon, as at 5 and The numeral 7 designates the step itself, which can be constructed of wood, and con-` nected to its upper face is a plate 8, which is formed into front and rear projections 9 and 10.
The numerals ll and 12 designate links which are pivoted on opposite sides of the end of the cross-piece and to the step-immediately in front of the projections of the top plate thereof.
At 13 is shown a bail which is pivoted to the side of the wagombody and adapted to lock over the step and keep the same folded when not in use.
5 is a plan my improvedv 'When ,it is desirable to use the step, the bail is thrown back, whereupon the step and links will drop forward and downward and the step itself will turn on the pivotal connections between it and the links, so that it will lie in horizontal position and the projections of the top plate located thereon will come into engagement vwith the links, and as the latter are also abutting against the bottom plate of the cross-piece of the wagon-body the whole step will be held rigid.
Slight and immaterial changes might be resorted to in constructing myimproved adjustable step without impairing its efficiency, and hence it is to be understood that I consider myself entitled to all such varied constructions as properly come within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, ism p l. The combination with a wagon-body having a cross-beam, of a step, a locking-plate connected to the beam, links pivoted to the -step and to the beam and adapted to abut on the lockingplate when the step is lowered,
and means for holding the step folded against the wagon-body.
2. The combination with a wagon-body, of a cross beam orpiece therefor, stops connected to the bottom of thecross-pieceand projecting out on opposite sides thereof, links pivoted to the end of the cross-beam, a step pivoted to the links, stops fastened to the step and adapted to come into engagement with the links, and means for holding the step and links folded against the wagon-body.
3. The combination with a wagon-body, of a cross-beam extending out from the side thereof, locking-stops connected to the projecting end of the cross-piece, a catch-plate connected to the top of the cross-piece, links pivoted to the cross-piece, a step to which the links are also pivoted, stops connected to the step, and a bail pivotedto the wagon-body and adapted for engagement with the step.,
In testimonywhereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
S. `T. CRIM, JACOB REDDING.
