PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN PORTER AND EDSON D. BARNUM, OF OANASERAGA, NEW YORK..
Ll FTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part o'f Letters Patent No. 230,569, dated July 27, 1880.
' Application tiled June 23,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, BENJAMIN PORTER and EDsoN D. BARNUM, both citizens of (lanaseraga, Allegany county, and State of New 5 York, have invented a new and useful Imi provement in Folding Jacks for Buggies, of which tile following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speci- Io tication, in which- Figure l represents the jack folded for storin Fig. 2 represents the jack unfolded and in posit-ion to be used. Fig. 3 represents the jack in position when sustaining the Weight of the buggy.
Our invention relates to that class of lifting' jacks used in connection with buggies and other light-draft carriages; and it consists in constructing` the upper section of the folding '20 jack tounfold and pass beyond the dead-point,
` and the long arm of the lever to do the same,
whereby the lever is automatically held in position While sustaining the rigid weight.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the exact manner in which we have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the base-support, and B the folding section, of a jack. 3o These two parts are pivoted together at a, as
shown in Fig. 2, and provided with the shoulders b b, so constructed as to allow the folding section to pass slightly beyond'a vertical position.
On the upper end of the folding section is pivoted, at a', the lever C, within the jaws E, which project suiiciently far from the face ot' the folding section as to allow of the long arm of the lever to be brought on\a' parallel line with the folding section, thereby throwing the point of strain beyond and outside of the pivoted points a a', thus securing an automatic.
' folding section opening beyond the dead-point.,
and the lever t'olding back on a parallel line with the folding section,l substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
BENJAMIN PORTER. EDSON D. BARNUM.
