UNITED STATES PATENT TIIEODORE F. VANDEGRIFT, OF SIIELBYVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE VANDEGRIFT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
NUT-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,765, dated September 7, 189'?. Application filed November 14, 1895. Renewed August 6, 1897. Serial No. 647,360. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern: leable metal forged or cast to provide the Be it known that I, THEODORE F. VANDE- looped grasping portion A', rigid jaw A2, lou- GRIFT, a citizen of the United States of Amergitudinal recesses ce and o', and transverse ica, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of openin g a2. The longitudinal recesses d and 5 Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented a are located in the upper part of the handle 55 certain new and useful Improvement-sin Nutportion A and are provided with reduced anlVrenches; and I do hereby declare the folnular bearing-surfaces a3 and o4, which exlowing to be a full, clear, and exact descriptend a slight distance into said recesses, the tion of the invention, such as will enable othbearing-surfaces ai beinglocatedimmediately xo ers skilled in the arty to which it appertains to below the face of the rigid jaw A2, while the 6o make and use the same, reference being had bearing-surfaces a4 are immediately below to the accompanying drawings, and to letters the transverse opening o2. of reference marked thereon, which form a B designates. the sliding jaw, which is propart of this specification. vided with depending members b and b,which i 5 This invention relates to improvements in iit within the longitudinal openings a and o 65 nut-wrenches of that class which includes a of the handle portion A, so as to bear against stationary jaw formed integral with the hanthe bearing-surfaces a3 and o,4 therein. The dle and a sliding jaw having members which depending member b of the sliding jaw is enter the handle portion, the sliding jaw bescrew-threaded for a greater part of its length zo ing adjusted with relation to the stationaryT and engages an adjusting-nut O, which is 7o jaw by means of a nut which engages the placed in the transverse opening a2 so that threaded member of the sliding jaw. the threaded opening therein will be on a line In carrying ont my invention I make use of with the longitudinal recess a, which receives a handle portion in which is formed a transsaid threaded member of the sliding jaw, and

The lower end of the dependingfmember b is preferably extended a slight distance below the member b and is cut away on opporsite sides, so that the sliding section of the Wrench can be removed and used as a screwdriver.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a nut-Wrench consisting of a handle portion having longitudinal recesses and a transverse opening and a sliding jaw having members which slide in the longitudinal recesses, one of the members being screw-threaded t0 engage a nut let into the transverse opening of the handle portion, and I therefore do not claim such construction broadly; but
lVhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A nut-Wrench comprising a handle portion A constructed to present a rigid jaw A2, looped grasping portion A', transverse opening a2 and longitudinal recesses a and CL having annular bearing-surfaces d3 and d4 therein, and a sliding jaw B having members b and b which slide in the longitudinal recesses ct and a', one of the members being screw-threaded together with a nut C let into the transverse opening d2 to engage the threaded member of the sliding jaw, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a Wrench, the combination, with the sliding jaw having two members one of Which is threaded,of a handle portionhaving a rigid jaw, a looped grasping portion and longitudinal recesses which receive the members of the sliding jaw; a nut let into the handle portion to engage the threaded member of the sliding jaw, webs a5 extending inwardly from the upper part of the looped grasping portion; and a Wooden block D cut away at its upper end to iit into the loop and engage the webs therein, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination in a nut-wrench, of a handle portion A constructed to present a rigid j aw A2, looped handle portion A', transverse opeuin g e2 to receive the adj ustin g-nut, and longitudinal recesses a and a' having annular bearing-surfaces CL3 and d4; the looped handle portion being provided with inwardlyprojecting Webs a5; a sliding jaW B having members ZJ and b which enter the longitudinal recesses c and a', one of the members being threaded to engage theA ad justing-nut; and a block D having its upper end recessed on each side to engage the Webs-When placed in the looped handle portion, the side of the looped handle portion being bent in upon the block to retain it in position, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
et. A sliding-jaw nut-Wrench, consisting or' four parts; to Wit, a fixed jaw and integral handle made of a casting or forging to pre- Vsent a jaw A2, longitudinal recesses a and d separated from each other by a central Wall and provided with annular bearing-surfaces d3 and 0,4, the central Wall terminating above the lower end of the longitudinal recesses, a transverse nut-receiving opening d2, the integral handle having Webs a5 opposite the curved end thereof` so as to render the end portions opposite the loop rigid; a sliding jaw having parallel members b and b', one member being threaded; a nut C; and a iillingblock D for the handle, said filling-block being recessedfor engagement with the Webs a5 and curved inner edges of the handle; all as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
