-- UNITED .rares PATENT OFFICE- "RICHARD II. PURNELL, OF ROSEDAL l, MISSISSIPPI.
PLOW.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,025, dated August 31, 1897. Application filed December 8. 1896. Serial No. 614,908. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. PURNELL, of Rosedale, in the county of Bolivar and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following `is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in plows, and particularly in that class of such implements in which it is desired to set the blade to different angles or altitudes by tilting the same on its connection with the standard; and the present invention consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed outV in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plow constructed-according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view showing the foot-bar or sole-piece andits connection with the standard and rear bar. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view, and Fig. lillustrates a somewhat diiferent construction. v
The plow-frame includes'V the ordinary beam A and handles B and the standard O and short depending rear bar D, which terminates at its lower end in a plane above the lower end of the standard C. This bar D is adapted for the adjustable connection of the rear end of the foot-bar or sole-piece. This is preferably effected by providing the bar D with a slot d, curved on an arc struck from the pivotal center at theAV lower end ofthe standard, as presently described, and alongside such slot I tooth or notch the depending bar at d to secure a firmer clampingof the bar held thereto.
X The foot orsole piece E may be in a single section, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or be in the two vside sections shown in Fig. 4, and is pivoted at its front end to the lower endjof the standard and has at its rear end the upturned portion e, which extends up to and is connected adj ustably with the short depending rear bar by means of the bolt F.
The foot-bar or sole-piece extends for a considerable distance on a straight line back from the blade and may, as shown in Fig. 2, be broadened at E' to efficiently serve as a sole-piece when the bar E is in its lowermost adjustment. The upturned portion e eX- tends up to the short rear bar and the latter does not interfere with the tilting of the plow-framewhen the rear end of the solepiece E is set up so the plow may run on such sole-piece in the various adjustments thereof up or down.
The blade, which is secured to the front end ofthe bar E, may be of the sweep form G (shown in Figs. l and 2) or of the moldboard form H (shown in Fig. 4) or any other desired form of share, shovel, sweep, or scraper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
l. The combination of the plow-frame having a standard and a reanbarthe foot -bar or sole -piece pivoted or fulcrumed to the standard, and provided atits rear Aend with an upturned portion and having the blade rigid with it at its front end, and means for securing said upturned end in different adjustments substantially as shown and described.
2. A plow substantially as described comprising the beam, the frame attachment secured thereto and composed of the depending standardand rear bar and connectingpiece integral with said standard and rear bar, the latter terminating at its lower end in a plane above that of the standard, the footbar or sole-piece pivoted to the standard hav-- ing the blade rigid with its front end and having at its rear end an upturned portion and means for securing it in dierent adjustments with the depending rear bar of the standard attachment substantially as shown and described. v
3. A plow-frame having an integral standard, connecting portion and rear bar, the
latter terminating at its lower end above the lower end of the standard, the foot-bar or sole-piece bearing the blade at its front end pivoted to the standard and havingat its rear end au upturned portion and devices connecting such upturned portion with the rear bar substantially as shown and described.
RICHARD H; PURNELL.
