UNITED STATES s' PATENT OFFICE@ GEORGE IV. MIDDLETON, OF APPLING, GEORGIA.
CHllVlNEY-SNEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,012, dated August 31, 189'?. Application led June 2, 1897. Serial No. 639.144. (No model.)
VTo a/ZZ whom, t may can/cern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MIDDLETON, residing at Appling, in the county of Columbia and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful OhimneySweeper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and useful device for cleaning chimneys either from the top or the bottom, though it is preferably employed for cleaning a chimney from the bottom, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple device which can be kept in every house, quickly set up Whenever desired, and
.operated by thehousemaid or servant.
Another object is to provide a device which can be quickly and easily fitted to any size or shape of fireplace. l
With these various objects in .view my invention consists, essentially, of abar provided i with adjustable feet and adapted to be fitted tion. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective viewof the device, the adjustable feetbeing detached.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a bar A, which'may be constructed ofwood or metal, as desired, and fitted upon each end of the said bar are the metallic feet B, said feet being slotted longitudinally, as shown at BQ in-order to slide freely. upon theends of the bar, the screws O kpassingthrou gh the slots, and upon the outer ends of the said screws are arranged the winged nuts D, whereby the feet can be securely held after being properly adj usted.
A vertical shaft E is journaled centrally of the bar A, said shaft carrying the brushy F, which is adapted vto be projected up the iiue or chimney, and upon the lower end of the shaft E is arranged a beveled gear G, which meshes with a similar gear H, mounted upon the end of the shaft'I,` journaled in hanger- `brackets K, depending from the bar A and provided witha crank L at the outer end, by means of whichthe shaft can be revolved and its rotary motion transmitted through the gears to the rotary brush, thereby thoroughly to catch the soot or dirt which is swept out by the rotary brush.
It will thus be seen that I provide an eX- ceedingly cheap and simple construction of chimney-sweeper which can be set up in any fireplace and can be quickly and easily operated to sweep and clean any construction of chimney.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- .1. In a chimney-sweeping device, a rotary brush adapted to be projected up the flue, a bar or frame in which the shaft of the brush is j ournaled, said bar or frame being provided with adjustable feet, whereby it can be fitted in any size of fireplace, vand the power-transmitting devices carriedl by the bar or frame for the purpose of rotating the brush, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a chimney-sweeping device, the combination with the bar having adjustable feet at each end, ofthe rotary'shaft journaled inthe said bar and provided with a brush at the upper end; and a beveled gear atthe lower end,the shaft arranged at'right angles to the vertical shaft and provided with a beveled gear at one end, the crankat the opposite end, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a chimney-sweeping device, the combination with a bar, of the adjustable metallic feet at the opposite ends, the verticalA shaft carrying the brush and beveled gear, the horizontal shaft carrying the beveled gear,
the crank, and the hangerbrackets,`all ar ranged and adapted to operate, substantially as shown and described. A,
4. In a chimney-sweeping device, the coinbination with the bar having screws at the opposite ends, the metallic feet having longi- IOO- tudina1s10ts,aud Lhewinged nuts forseeurely at the inner end, and the crank at the outer holding the feet upon the ends of the bur, of end, subs'antially as shown and described. the Vertical shaft journaled een trally of the T bur und having a brush at the upper end and GEORGE V MIDD LE'I Om' 5 Carrying u beveled gear at the lower end, the Vtnesses:
depending hanger-brackets, the rotary shaft GEO. W. GRAY, journaled therein carrying the beveled gear GEO. M. OLIVE.
