. Extensible Piano-Stools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to folding piano chairs or stools, the object being to provide an improved construction of stools of this class which are adapted to be used by one or two persons; and the invention vconsists in the peculiar construction and arran geme-nt of the several parts of the device, all as hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.A

In the drawings forming part of this speci- -fioation, Figurel lis a sectional view of a piano-chair embodying myimprovements, the chair in this gure being shown with the parts arranged for two persons. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of said chair, showing the parts thereof as arranged for the use-of one person only. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the vchair on line A3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 illustrates detail parts hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the fixed seat andlegs of a fourlegged stool. The said seat has a central opening through it, in which a ratchet-post O moves vertically, on which post the seat A is fixed. Bis a hollowguide-box for said ratchet-post O, preferably of iron, which is firmly secured to the under side of the subseat A. A pawl D is pivotally connected to said guide-box for engagement with the rack on said ratchetpost O, whereby the latter and the said seat A are held in such vertical positions as they may be moved or adjusted to. E is a knobbearing spindle (see Fig. 3) for operating said pawl, and a spring e on said spindle acts to move and hold said pawl against said ratchetpost C and in engagement with said ratchet, whereby said seat A is held in position, as aforesaid.l Two cast -iron slideways F F, Fig. 4c, are secured against the under side of said 'subseat, in which the'parts G G of a three-part sliding frame, comprising also the end-uniting bar g, have a sliding motion, and the seat His a second subseat, hinged by one edge to said bar g Aand having a depending borderl on its opposite free edge, to the lower edge of which is hinged the supporting end Fig. 2, to one presenting seats for two people, as shown in Fig. l, are as follows: The said sliding frame, composed ofthe parts G G g, is drawn out, as in Fig. l, and so secured by the thumb-nuts n, which screw against said slideways.Y The subseatH is then swung outward and upward to the position shown in said last-named figure, and the legs I, which are hinged on the subseat H, are brought to an upright position, as shown. The seats A and A2 are then raised or lowered to the required positions either equally or otherwise, according to the requirements of the two persons who are to occupythem, the pawls D and -D' acting automatically against the ratchetposts O O when the latter are raised and being drawn from said posts by means of the knob-bearing spindle E.

The above-described stool folds into small space when adjustable for the use of one person and in a moment can be arranged for two. The structural features which conduce to these conveniences are the folding and extensible ones above described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A folding and extensible piano-stool for one or two persons comprising two subseats A and II, the latter supported to move horizontally from the former and to swing from ,a vertical to a horizontal position, combined with supporting-legs for said seats, one of which legs has a hinge connection with said seat H, combined with the seats A' and A2,

and means for supporting one edge of said seat H, under said seat A, and means for supporting said seats A and A2, vertically adjustable on said subseats A and H, substantially as set forth.

2. A folding and extensible piano-stool for one or two persons comprising the subseat A, and supporting-legs therefor, the slideways F, F, secured under said subseat, a horizontally sliding frame engaging said slide- Ways, a subseat H, hinged to said frame, a folding leg I, hinged to said last-named subseat, a guide-box B secured under each of said subseats, a pawl pivoted to each of said guide-boxes, combined with two ratchet-posts C, C', entering said guide-boxes, the seats A' and A2, attached to said ratchet-posts, and means for operating the said pawls whereby said last-named seats are adjustable to varying vertical positions, substantially as set zo forth.
