Description

(No Model.) J; E. GAITLEY.
STOVE GRIDDLE LIFTER.
No. 588,819. Patented Aug. 24,1897.
UNITED STATES- PATENT FFICE.
JOHN E. GAITLEY, OF TROY, NElV YORK.
STOVE-G RIDDLE LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,819, dated. August 24, 1897.
Application filed March 28, 1896. Serial No. 585,206. (N0 m l-l To all whom, it ntay concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOHN E. GAITLEY, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invent-ed new and useful Improvements in Stove- Griddle Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
. Myinvention relates toimprovernents upon that class of devices which are term ed stovelifters,.and which are provided with a grasping-handle at one end, a foot at the other end adapted to engage with a recess formed in the griddle covering the pot-holes in the tops of stoves and ranges, and by which said griddles may be lifted or put in place; and the object of my improvements upon this class of devices is to adapt them to be used in connection with griddles having differing-sized lifting-recesses.
Accompanying this specification, to form a part of it, there is a sheet of drawings containing two figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them.
Of the illustrations, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved griddle-lifter shown as entered within a griddle-lifting recess and in a position to grasp the griddle so that it can be raised from out or returned to the pothole of a stove or range. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved lifter shown as applied to lift a griddle, with the latter shown in diametrical section.
The several parts of the device thus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows.
The letter S designates the lifter-shank,-
which in this instance is shown as provided with an encircling coil handle made of wire, which is arranged to encircle the shank between the shoulder h and the ring R on its outer end.
The letter L designates the leg of the lifter, which is provided with the foot F, having the slot 1". This foot at its toe end T is made to taper, so as to adapt it to enter differing-sized griddle-recesses. I
The letter A designates a clutching-lever, which at each of its sides is provided with a trunnion-journal J, these journals each being projected from one of the opposite sides of the clutching-lever A, preferably back of its cross-center,and the letters a designate arms, of which there is one at each end, arranged at right angles to the lever A.
The letters b b designate bearings formed in the heel end of the foot F, into which the journals J of the clutching-lever are entered and in which it is pivoted to oscillate.
The lifter, with the exception of the coilwire handle, is preferably made of malleable cast-iron, into which the journal-bearings are cast with open. ends, and into which the journals J are entered when the endsof the bearings are set inwardly to retain the journals in place.
The letters G designate a stove or range griddle, and D a lifting-recess formed therein, said recess having a lug d projected inwardly from each of its opposite sides. As thus made, when the toe end .of the lifter is entered within the recess D, so as to pass beneath the lugs (Z and the outer handle end is depressed the toe end will engage with the recess, and the clutchinglever A at both of its ends will bear down upon the griddle-surface, so that the toe end will be held in place and the lifter will securely grasp the griddle. By thus making the toe end of the lifter-foot tapering it will, in combination with the clutching-lever A, adapt the lifter to be used on griddles having differing-sized recesses, and one size of lifter will answer for a great variety of stoves and ranges.
I am aware that a lifter has been patented in which a pivoted lever has been used, the outer end of which would engage with the griddle-top when the lifter was entered within a griddle-recess, but in this older device as constructed the inner end of the clutchinglever was pivoted to another lever, which at its inner end was pivoted to the shank. In this older device the clutching-lever was pivoted to the top of the foot, and by pivoting it to the under side of the heel I am enabled to dispense with the additional lever by which 7 differing construct-ion is made a' necessary part of the older device alluded to, and to thus simplify and reduce the cost of construction.
Instead of the coil handle shown any wellknown form of handle may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what connect, and be operated substantially in the [O manner as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed at the city of Troy, this 13th day of November, 1895, in the presence of the two witnesses whose names are hereto Written. JOHN GAITLEY.
W. E. HAGAN,
