Description

(No Model.)
A. M. WARD.
EYEGLASSES No. 588.723. Patented Aug. 24,1897- WITNESSES INVENTOQ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
o ALBERT M. WARD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE JOHNSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
EYEG LASSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,723, dated August 24, 1897.
Application filed October 7, 1896.
Serial No. 608,134. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. WARD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of \Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Eyeglasses; and I declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
M'y invention has for its object an improvement in nose-guards for eyeglass-frames; and it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a viewin front elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View in perspective of the rigid guard with the supplemental guard attached thereto. Fig. T is an enlarged view of one of the guards, showing its adj ustability in dotted lines.
I carry out my invention as follows:
A A represent the eyeglass-frames, provided with posts a a, to which is attached the nose-spring B.
O 0 represent rigid guards or guard-arms secured at their upper ends to the corresponding posts a, said rigid guards being preferably constructed of a metal arm 0, with an inner facing 0 of any suitable material, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 3, These rigid arms are secured to the posts in any suitable manner, as by screws 0.
D D represent supplemental guards or guard-arms formed of coiled wire, the supplemental guards being so constructed and arranged as to be self-adjusting. These supplemental guards are offset from the longitudinal plane of the glass-frames, as indicatedin Fig. 2. The ,self-adjustability bf the supplemental guards is. indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 4. As shown, the supplemental guards are provided at their upper ends with terminal disks or surfaces D. To engage the coiled-spring supplemental guards disks or surfaces Dwith the coiled springs or arms, they are each provided with a post 01, upon which the upper end of the corresponding coiled spring is sleeved and with which thepost d is held in place.
The supplemental guards are preferably secured to the lower extremities of the rigid guards, but I would have it expressly understood that I do not limit myself solely thereto, as the supplemental arms might be attached to the rigid arms intermediate the extremities of the rigid arms.
The self-adjusting feature of the supplemental guards is a matter of very great importance and. utility.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination with the eyeglass-frames, of nose-guards G O secured thereto provided with posts 0, and flexible supplemental 'guards D D formed with coiled-wire arms secured upon said posts, and terminal disks D provided with posts 01 engaged with the upper ends of said coiled-wire arms, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT 'M. WARD. Witnesses:
N. S. WRIGHT, JOHN F. MILLER.
