` UNITED.' STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
nUGi-I BROWN, or ANN ARBoR, MICHIGAN.
HOLDERFOR CALENDARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No.v588,631, dated August 24, 1897. Application filed November 30, 1896. SerialNo. 613 ,927. (No model.)V
T0 @ZZ whom, it may co/'zcerm' Be it known that I, HUGH BROWN, of Ann Arbor, in the county of VVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Calendars and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
The invention relates to a casing or holder for the sheets of a calendar or for teachers class-records, lists of words, names of subjects, or other matter to be kept in a certain order and in convenient shape for handling.
The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the slips, sheets, or cards employed may be so disposed that when accertain date or subject iseXposed memoranda, comments, or remarks relating to said date or subject will also be disclosed upon a separate sheet, slip, or card from that indicating the date or the subject. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the past subjects or dates disposed of and their records, comments, or memoranda may be preserved in a manner for convenient consultation without interfering with the dates or subjects to be subsequently consulted or displayed.
The inventionv consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed o ut in theclaims.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of the holder or casing and the sheets of a calendar contained therein in'accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rearjelevation of the im# proved casing orholder. Fig. 3 is a longi tudinal vertical 'section taken substantially, on the line 3 3 of'Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the holder and the calendar, sheets, or cards supported in an inclined' position. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the retaining device for the sheets, cards, or slips to be contained in the holder or casing; and Fig. 6 is' a `rear elevation of a portion ofv the casing or holder, illustratingA a slight modification in the manner in which the retaining device is to be secured to the holder or casing.
The holder. or 'casing A consists of a back plate provided at the topwith an opening 10 or other means for supporting the casing. in a perpendicular position, and at `each side of the back plate of the casing or holder ears 11 are forwardly projected, which ears are in transverse alinement and stand, preferably, at a right angle to the back. Preferablythe back isv stamped out so as to form a tongue 12 near'its vupper end, separated from the back proper at its bottom and its sides by a space 13, andin this tongue 12 an opening 14 is made for the introduction of the finger, so that the tongue may be readily-drawn outward from' the back. This tongue 1 2 when so drawn outward-for example, to a position at right angles to the back of the casing or holder, as shown in Fig. Li-will rest upon the support provided for the casing or holder and sustain the same in an inclined position, the
-top or upper portion of the casing or holder beingelevated above its lower edge.
Below'the tongue 12 in the back of the casing or holder a transverse opening 15 is made, and at each side ofthe upper portion of this opening 15 an upwardly-.extending recess 1G is produced, as is particularly shown in Fig. 6. The bottom wall of the opening 15 is so shaped as to produce a lug 17, which will eX- tend horizontally of the opening, but is separated fromits side walls bya suitable space, as is also shown in Fig. 6, and preferably the material which is struck out from the back to form this space between the ends of the lug 17 and the side walls of the opening 15 is carried outward or backward to form clampingarms 18, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The retaining device for the cards, slips, or sheets C to be displayed is shown in detail in Fig. 5, and is preferably made from a single .piece of spring-wire of suitable gage. .Inthe and the material of the arms 2O is bent upon i itself upward and returned over therearbar 19, forming horizontal arms 21.
In thesurfaces of the upper arms 2l of the retaining device vertical slots or 'channels' 23 are made in each side. taining device to the casing or holder the back bar 19 of its lower yoke-section B is In applying the re- IOO - designated by the reference-letter C, is provided with apertures 24, so arranged or placed that the upper arms 21 of the retaining device may pass through these apertures until all of the cards, sheets, or slips are threaded on or are supported by the lower arms 2O of the :retaining device. The upper arms 21 of the retaining device are then introduced at their rear ends into the recesses 1G at the upper sides of the opening 15, and this is accolnplished by pressing downward the aforesaid upper arms, and when theiiat-tened portions of these upper arms have been properly entered into the recesses 1G the side walls of these recesses will iit into the channels 23, made in the rear extremities of the aforesaid upper arms 2l.
Under this construction it will be observed that the cards, slips, or sheets will be adjustable on the retaining device, and whenthe cards, slips, or sheets are faced or are printed to be used as a calendar their numbered faces will be toward the rear.
When a memorandum -referring to a particular date is required to be made, the card bearing that date is carried upward until the plain surface of the next under card is exposed, upon which the memorandum is made. As each date passes by the cards are carried upward from the lower members 2O of the retaining device to the upper members 21 and will stand in an upright position supported by the back of the casing or holder, while the foremost card on the lower'meinber 2O of the retaining device will present the memoranda made for the date represented by the card carried uppermostnas, for example, when the card representing March 1, as shown in Fig. 1, is brought to the upper position, or is carried upon the upper members 21 of the retaining device, the back of the card, which bears the date of March 2, would have produced thereon any remarks, notices, zc. necessary to be attended to or taken into consideration on the date exposed at the upper portion of the casing.
It is evident that as none of t-he sheets, slips, or cards need be destroyed they may be consulted at any time, and that the slips, sheets, or cards which are carried over upon the upper members of the retaining device will in no manner interfere with the proper manipulation of the cards, slips, or sheets remaining on the lower portions of the retaining device. It is furthermore evident that when all of the slips, cards, or sheets have been consulted or have been used a second series may be substituted by simply removing the retaining device from the casing or holder, from which retaining device the old sheets may be removed and the new sheet-s placed in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A holder for calendars or for similar purposes, consisting of a casinghaving an opening in its back, a keeper forming a portion of one wall of the said opening, and a retaining device consisting of a spring material bent upon itself to form a lower yoke-section, the side members whereof are carried upward and returned in direction of the cross-bar 0f the yoke, the cross-bar of the yoke being arranged for engagement with the said keeper, and the terminals of the return members of the retaining device being fitted for locking engagement with the wall of the opening in the casing opposite that at which the keeper is placed, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a holder for calendars and for similar purposes, the combination, with a casing having an opening in its back, and a keeper projected from one wall of the said opening, the opposite wall of the opening having recesses therein, of a retaining device consisting of a spring-bar bent upon itself to form a lower yoke-section, the side members whereof are carried upward and returned in direction of the cross-bar of the yoke-section, the termimals of the upper or return members being shaped to enter the recesses in the wall of the said opening in the casing, while the crossbar of the yoke portion of the said retaining device is adapted to engage with the aforesaid keeper, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a holder for calendars and for similar purposes, the combination, with a casing having an opening in its back, and a keeper projected from one wall of the said opening, the opposite wall ofthe opening having recesses therein, of a retaining device consisting of a spring-bar bent upon itself to form a lower yoke-section, the side members whereof are carried upward and returned in direction of the cross-bar of the yoke-section, the terminals of the upper or return members being shaped to enter the recesses in the wall of the said opening in the casing, while the crossbar of the yoke portion of the retaining device is adapted to engage with the aforesaid keeper, and clamps located on the back of the casing, adapted to be carried over the cross-bar of the yoke of the retaining device when the said device is in position on the casing, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a holder for calendars and for similar purposes, the combination, with a casing provided with an opening in its back and having a keeper projected from one of its walls, the opposite wall of the opening being provided with recesses therein, of a retaining device constructed of a spring material bent upon itself to form a lower yoke-section the side IOO members whereof. are carried upward and in direction of the cross-bar of the yoke, the said side members having their terminals corresponding in cross-section to the shape oi' the recesses in the Wall of the opening of the casing, the terminals of the return members of the retaining device being likewise provided with side channels which receive the walls of the aforesaid recesses when the retaining device is placed in position on the casin g, as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a holder for calendars and for similarl purposes, the combination, With a casing provided with an opening in its back andhaving a keeper projected from one of its walls, the opposite wall of the opening being provided with recesses therein,'of a retaining device constructed of a spring materialbent upon of the casing, and adapted to support the said casing in an inclined position, as and for the purpose specified.
