Description

(No Model.) Y i D. B; WARE. BED ATTACHMENT.
No. 588,622. Patented Aug. 24, 1897.
WITNESSES Attorney UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICEQ DANIEL B. \VARE, OF ATHENS, MICHIGAN.-
- BED ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 588,622, dated August 24, 1897. Application filed November 4,1896. Serial No. 611,016. (No model.)
T0 00 whom it may concern):
Beitknown that I, DANIEL B. WARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, and has more particular relation tion to back-restsfor the same.
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be herein after more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents the head of a double bed, one of the adj ustable panels being in operative position; and
Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through said head on the line of the inclined panel.
A in the drawings represents the head proper of the bedstead B B, the adjustable panels. Said head A is provided with the usual supporting-legs a and has two panelreceiving recesses a a formed in its front face, with a central bar a dividing the same. The side Walls of the upper portions of the recesses a are grooved, as at a and notched plates a applied therein. The said upper ends of the panels B are provided with laterally-projecting studs 1) b, adapted to slide within the grooves a and be secured in:-- any desired notches in the bars 05*. The lower ends of the panels are each provided with two notched segmental bars I) 1), arranged on opposite sides of the same. The notches in said bars are provided with a straight side 12 and an inclined side b so that as the forward ends of said panels B are pulled out the bars I) will readily ride over the laterally projecting studs b mounted upon the frame of the head, but upon any reverse movement will become lodged upon said studs by the vertical wall b engaging the same. The'said bars are adapted to work in slots 19 79 formed in the frame of the head.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that when the panels B are in their sired to use either one or the other of the panels as an inclined rest for the back for an invalid or a person desiring to read while lying in bed, the lower end of the panel is pulled forward, causing the bars I) to ride over the studs 1) until the proper adjustment is secured, when the notches in said bars fall over said studs and hold the panel in the desired adj usted position. As the lower end of said panel is pulled outward the studs 1) descend in the grooves a and when a desired adjustment has been reached the said studs 6 are forced-into the proper notches of the bars a. At the same time the notched bars I) are raised slightly, so as to disengage them from the studs 6 and permit the lower end of the panel to be pushed inward. When the panel has been returned to its normal 'position, the said bars I) project down below the bed out of sight.
If so desired, one or both of the panels B may be upholstered, as shown in the drawings, so that a soft and yielding support is provided for the back.
It will also be observed that with my invention, while the panels normally occupy such a position as to be altogether withdrawn into the head and excite no suspicion of their real utility, they may be instantly withdrawn from their respective recesses when so desired and adjusted in any inclined position desired, thereby forming a comfortable support for the back.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, an d desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the head of a bedstead of a panel movably mounted therein and provided at its lower end with segmental notched adj usting-bars, projections mounted upon said head and adapted to support said notched bars, and means for adjustably connecting the upper end of said panel with the head; the construction and operation being such that the lower portion of the panel may be pulled outward and automatically located in its adjusted position by the gravity of the segmental bars causing the projections on the head to engage other notches, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the head of a bedstead of a movable panel mounted therein, notched bars rigidly secured to said head, lateral projections on the upper end of said panel adapted to engage said notched bars, segmental notched bars pivot-ally connected to the lower end of said panel, and projections formed upon the head and adapted to support said segmental bars; the construction and operation being such that the notched bars automatically lock with the projections on the head by their owninherent gravity.
3. The combination with the head of a bedstead provided with a plurality of panel-recesses, of vertical notched bars mounted. in said recesses, movable panels also mounted in said recesses, and provided with lateral Witnesses:
W. M. ALBER'rsoN, W. II. LEWIs.
