014*. #MW. 5 X Ve/M 7A7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUDSON L. THOMSON, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
\ GUlDE-ANVlLa SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,505, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed June 11, 1896. Serial No. 595,104. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUDsoN L. THOMSON, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Guide-An- Vils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for guiding a strip of leather while being united by rivets to another piece or pieces of similar or other material; and the object of the invention is to provide an anvil against which rivets may be clenched, the anvil having means for insuring the proper location of the line of rivets relatively to the edge or edges of the strip.
To this end the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as herein described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of an anvil embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents in outline the operation of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate th same parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,a indicates the anvil proper, which may have its upper end provided with a concavity and a central boss, so as to adapt it for use in clenching rivets of the bifurcated or two-pronged type indicated in Fig. 3. This anvil, which may be suitably supported, is provided at its upper end with a flange 19, preferably rectangular, as shown, the said flange being provided with a rib c at each end. The two ribs 0 c are united by a bridge d, which is located at one side of the path of movement of the plunger or hammer used in riveting, the under side of said bridge being sufficiently elevated above the upper end of the anvil to permit the insertion of a strip of leather between said bridge and the top of the anvil.
In the use of this device the strip of leather, which is indicated at 1, is inserted under the bridge 01 from the side toward which the material is to be fed when forming a riveted seam. The sheet or sheets of leather or other pieces to which the strip is to be united are fed above said bridge-piece, and while the parts are so located relatively to each other and stationary a rivet, such as that shown at c, Fig. 3, may be driven through the pieces tobe united by means of a suitable hammer or plunger, as at f. Obviously, however, the device may be used when hand implements only are being employed for riveting.
I claim- 1. As a means for holding a strip of leather while being riveted to another piece or pieces, the anvil 0. having its upper end provided with a horizontal rectangular flange 19, two of the edges of said flange having vertical parallel ribs 0 c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a means for holding a strip of leather while being riveted to another piece or pieces,
an anvil provided with guiding-ribs at each side of the upper end thereof, and a bridgepiece connecting the said ribs above the plane of the top of the anvil and at one side of the path of movement of a hammer or plunger.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of June, A. D. 1896.
Jonson L. THOMSON.
