JOHN ASKEW, or LEAMIINGITON, CANADA.
HINGE-ROLLER GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 588,374, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed August 24,1896. Serial No. 603,708. (No model.) Patented in Canada April 28, 1896, No. 52,130.
farm-gates which are supportedupon ahinged.
roller in such manner that the gate may be rolled lengthwise upon its hinged support until the latter is brought midway upon the gate to allow the gate to be balanced thereon and easily swung upon its'hinge-support to I widen the gate-opening or to close the gateopening partly by a swinging and partly by a sliding movement of the gate; Gates of this class have been long in general use, but
have been defective in the hinge connection,
thus precluding its use for many purposes or requirements. 7
My invention consists in certain details of construction, comprising a swiveled pulley, a pulley strap and bolt, and a holder secured to the post in a novel manner, andalso in stop-blocks of novel construction secured to. the longitudinal. plates or members of the gate, which will receivethe shock or impact of the gate, and thus. relieve the hinge-sup port of undue strain.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate equipped with my improved sliding hinge-support, the gate shown partly open; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the upper part of the gate-supporting post and hinge connection enlarged; Fig. 3, a fragment of the latch-post of the gate and Vlatch-keeper secured thereto, and Fig. 4 a fragment of one 'of the gate standards and rails with my antipercussion stop-block secured thereto.
The gate-panel A is supported upon a gatesupporting post B to slide longitudinally and .also to swing thereon, and is provided at its free swinging end with a plate ct, having a projecting end a, which forms a latch and engages with a keeper'O upon a latch-post D when the gate is closed. The keeper 0 consists in an elbowor angle-plate having a bolt 0 formed integral therewith to pass through the said post and be secured thereon by means of a nut 0 fitted upon the threaded end of said bolt.
The gate-panel A is supported upon the post B in the following-described manner: A rectangular block of hard wood forms the hingeholder E and is fitted into a mortise in the post B and secured thereon by a bolt e, passed through said post and holder and secured thereto by a nut e, fitted upon the end of said bolt to bear upon the post on the opposite side of the hinge-holder E and securely clamp the said holder upon the post in a simple, strong, and inexpensive manner. The hinge-holder E is bored vertically at the middie of its projecting end 6 to receive a boltf,
welded or made fast to a stirrup-strap F, the
lower ends of which carry an axle-bolt f, upon which is supported a roller G to turn freely thereon and be held between the plates of thestirrup-strap. A washerand split key f upon the upper end of the pivot-bolt f serves to hold the swivel-hinge securely upon the hinge-holder E, to be suspended therefrom; The stirrup-strap F is of sufficient length to receive the longitudinal plate b (preferably the plate next below thetop plate of the gate) therein and allow the gate to be supported upon and be mov'edfreely lengthwise upon the supporting-roller G.
The plates b of the upright end post A and middle post A of the gate-panel A are bolted to the opposite sides of the longitudipost-plates, and a slot h in the tongue h receives a bolt 7L which passes through the gate-plates and through the said slot and holds the block H securely in. place and also admits of a sliding movement to receive the impact of the block against the hinge-holder. A gate thus supported will withstand severe usage without breaking down or wrenching the hinged roller from the gate-supporting post.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters 1ate11t In a swivel sliding gate, the combination with the supporting-posts and gate-panel, of a hinge-holder secured to the supporting-post to project therefrom and spring-actuated percussion-blocks supported upon the gate-panel to relieve the gate and hinge-holder of shock, IO substantially as described.
In testimony that I clain1 tl1e foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN ASKEIV.
