B. E. HIGGINS.
GATE. No. 556,887. Patented Mar. 24, 1896.
756172555 65, v [HZ/6771971 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDlVARD E. HIGGINS, OF CROXV SUMMIT, EST VIRGINIA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 556,887, dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed June 12, 1895. Serial No, 552,602 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crow Summit, in the county of Jackson and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
My gate consists of the horizontal bars, (marked 4,) all of which excepting the upper one have their ends fastened between the end upright bars, (marked 5.) The top bar passes freely through the slot formed by the rear upright bars (one being placed on either side of. the horizontal bars) and is hinged bya elevis and hook to the hinge-post. The top rail has its front end connected to the lever 3. The lever 3 is formed by placinga narrow strip on either side of the gate, and has its top end connected to the top rail of the gate and its lower end to the horizontal latch 1, and is bolted at an intermediate point to one of the fixed rails of the gate. The latch 1, besides being pivoted to the lower end of the lever 3, is also bolted to the handle 2 at its rear end.
The vertical handle2 is pivoted to the rear end of the latch 1 and also to one of the fixed rails of the gate.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a gate having a loose top rail carrying the upper hinge, of a horizontal latch, and a vertical lever pivoted to one of the fixed rails of the gate, and connecting the latch with the front end of the loose top rail, substantially as shown.
2. The combination with a gate, of the top rail 4 connected at its rear to the hinge-post, and passing freely between the rear upright battens of the gate; the horizontal latch 1, the vertical latch-handle 2, and the lever 3 pivoted to the latch, to the front end of the top rail 4:, and to one of the fixed rails of the gate, sustantially as shown.
