GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,659, dated March 3, 1891.
Application led Tune 27, 1889. Renewed January 22, 1891. Serial No. 378,667. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES E. BUCK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing atLansing, in the county of Ingham and-State of Michigan, have invented certain -new and useful Improvements in Gates; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gates 3 and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, the ligure represents a side view of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same lowered in full lines and the front end elevated in dotted lilies.
A refers to the post upon which the gate is hung, said post having projecting therefrom toward the gate three eyes l, 2, and 3, the bar or upright- B of the gate having similar eyes et and 5 attached thereto. Through these eyes passes a rod C, the upper end of which is bent to receive one end of a link D, the lower end of which engages with a hook a secured to the rear end of the leverE. The gate is preferably provided with vert-ical bars B, B', and B2, and to these bars the rails of the gate are pivoted. The central upright B is provided with notches e. and c', with which one end of the levenE engages.
llo the upper rail of the gate is rigidly attached a strap F, the forward end of which is provided with a perforation through which passes a bolt f for securing in place the rear end of the lever Y, theopposite end of said lever Y engaging a pin secured to the front end of the gate. The bolt f passes through a slot formed in the upper end of the brace G, and this slot has smooth sides, as shown. The bar G is pivotally attached to the lower corner of the gate adjacent tothe post A, and to the same is pivoted the lever E by means of a bolt g.
The front vertical bar Bof the gate is provided with a strap or loop 72., through which passes a pin c', with which the notched end of the lever Y engages, and when the first notch of this lever engages the pin the gate will simply be raised verticallyin its horizontal position, when the end of the lever E is moved to the notch e. Then it is desired to incline the outer end ot' the gate, the second notch of the leverY will engage the pin t' and hold the gate inclined whether the rear end is raised or lowered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a swinging gate, of a h inge-rod C, having abent end, a link or bar hung thereon, a lever E, pivoted to a brace G, its end engaging with said link and with retaining-notches on the gate, and brace G, one end of which is pivoted upon t-he gate, while the opposite end slides upon a bolt f, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a swinging gate having rails and vertical panels pivotally connected to each other, of eyes attached to the gate and supporting-post, through which a rod passes to allow the gate to slide vertically upon said rod, a brace G, pivoted to the gate at its rear lower corner, the opposite end of said brace sliding upon a bolt or pin secured to the upper end of the central panel, and a lever E, pivoted to said brace G, one end thereof engaging a swinging connection, while the opposite end engages notches formed in the lower end of the central panel, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, ina swinging gate constructed substantially as shown, of the rod C, upon which the hinges of the gate slide vertically, the link D, supported on rod C, lever E, engaging at its opposite ends with link D and with retaining-notches on the gate, brace G, pivoted to the gate at its rear lower corner and also to the lever E, and the lever Y, fulcru med on a pin f, which passes through a slot in the upper end of brace G and engaging a pin e' on the front stile of the gate to maintain the gate in an inclined position when desired, allas herein described.
e In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
