UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUDSON L. THOMSON, or WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS} HAND RlVETlNG-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,370, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed June 11, 1896. SerialNo. 595,103. (No model.)
To all! whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J UDsoN L.- THOMSON,
of Waltham, inthe count-y of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Riveting-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for uniting pieces of leather or other work by means of rivets, preferably of the bifurcated or two'- pronged type; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this type particularly adapted for light handwork andwhich is provided with means for temporarily'holding a rivet above the work and in line with the anvil.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a device embodying my improvements, partly in section. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the slide.carry-' ing the retaining-spring. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the anvil.
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate the same parts throughout the Several Views.
In the drawings, a represents a block, which may be adapted to be attached to a suitable bench or other support, if desired, but is intended to be grasped by the hand of the op- Projecting from the lower portion of the block a is an arm I), having at its end an anvil 0, formed as a concavity with a central" raised boss. Parallel with said arm I) and projecting from the block a is a spring-arm (1, having its outer end provided with a slight concavity d opposite the anvil c. This arm is held between lateral walls a of the block and is prevented from moving longitudinally therein by a pin a2, passing through. a hole in the rear end of the arm 61. Fitted to the arm 01 is the slide 2, having a spring 6 projecting therefrom, said spring normally pressing upward against the arm at and bifurcated at its end to form a jaw 6 1 In use the tool will be held or secured with the arm b and anvil 0 above a suitable rigid support, and a rivet, as f, is slipped into the jaw e with its head confined in the concavity d by the action of the spring 6, as indicated in Fig. 1.
tween arms 6 and d to the desired point, and a light blow of a suitable hammer or other tool is given upon the upper end of the arm d, so as to drive the rivet partially into the material. The slide 6 is now moved back along the .arm d, either by the hand grasping rivet may now be driven down with force enough to spread or clench its prongs on the anvil, the ends being turned up against the under side of the work being operated upon.
A pin 6*, fixed to the arm, serves as a stop to limit the forward position of the slide e with the rivet to be driven in proper position over the anvil.
I claim- 1. A hand riveting-tool comprising in its cbnstruction two arms rigidly connected, one of said arms being resilient and provided with an anvil at its end, and the other arm being provided with a device for temporarily holding a rivet opposite said anvil, said device being located between the two arms.
. 2. The combination with the block a, of the arms I) and d, the former being provided with an anvil o at its end, and the latter having a concavity opposite said anvil, and the slide 6 fitted to 'the arm 61 and provided with the spring 6 under the arm 01 and having the bifurcated end e In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of June, A. D. 1896. I
JUDSON L. THOMSON.
