um nl;
L'Hllillll-.lllllllll (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMZI CLARK, OF MENDON, MICHIGAN.
BOLT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,016, dated February 22, 1887.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, Anzi CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meudon, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Tire-Bolt Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in tire-bolt holders; and it consists in the pecu` liar construction and combination of parts, that will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in operation. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same with one of the plates removed to show the subjacent mechanism. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line x x of Fig. 2.
A B represent opposing plates, which form the body of the bolt-holder, which plates are secured together at their four corners by screws C. The plate B has at its front end a stud, D, arranged in the center of the plate and in line with the stud D, and at a suitable distance therefrom is a similar stud, E.
F represents a punch having an enlarged head, G, the face of which is roughened, as shown. The reduced shank of this punch passes through aligned openings in the studs D and E, and a coiled eXtensile spring, I, is placed on that portion of the shank between the said studs. One end of this spring bears against the stud G and the other end thereof is conined by a transverse pin, K, that is driven through the shank of the punch.
L represents handles or levers, that are fulcrumed on the screws at the rear corners of the plates and have inwardlyprojecting arms L', bent at a suitable angle from the levers, which arms overlap each other and bear against the rear or inner end of the shank of the punch. Cn the same screws to which the levers L are fulcrurned are pivoted dogs M, to the rearwardly-extending ends of which are secured flat curved springsN, that bearagainst the inner sides of the outer ends of the levers L. The eyes of said levers are countersunk, as at L2, to receive projecting bosses M', with which the eyes of the spring-actuated dogs are provided.
C represents levers that are fulcrumed on the screws at the front corners of the plates and have forwardly and rearwardly extending arms O and O2,.respectively. At the outer ends of the arms O' are formed inwardly-eX- tending hooks O3, which are adapted to catch against the inner opposite sides of the tire of the wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. Flat springs P bear against the rear ends of the arms C, so as to keep the hooked ends of the arms O' normally distended.
A person using this bolt-holder grasps the handles or levers L thereof, and by compressing them causing the arms L' to force the punch outwardly, and the spring actuated dogs, which bear against the inner sides of the eX- tended arms of the hoolclevers, force the hooks toward each other, causing them to grasp firmly between the inner sides of the tire and the outer side of the rim of the wheel. The punch bears against the outer end of the tirebolt firmly and holds it so securely that the nut on the inner end of said bolt may be removed without turningthe bolt.
This tool in its operation does not abrade or scratch the paint from the wheel, is cheap and simple, and effects a great economy in time and labor.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The combination of the fulcrumed levers L, having the arms L', the movable punch bearing against the arms L', the spring-actu; ated dogs, and the fulcrumed hook -levers against which the Said dogs bear, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a tire-bolt holder, of the fulcrumed levers L, having the arms L', the spring-actuated punch bearing against the ends of arms L', the fnlcrumed hook-levers, the springactuated dogs bearing against the inner extended arms thereof, and the springs l?, to keep -the hooked ends of the levers normally distended, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMZI CLARK.
