CURRYCOMB.
$PECIF1CATIQN formingpart of Letters Patent No. 588,352, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed August 7, 1896. Serial No. 602,035. (No model.)
i To 011% whom it may concern:
' such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same.
My invention relates to currycombs.
My object is to provide a more simple, cheap, and compact currycomb which will be of such novel and improved construction that its teeth will be normally housed or protected, but will be projected for usevvhen the comb is applied to the animal, and after removal from the latter the teeth will be automatically cleaned:
Having this object in View, my invention consists of a currycomb comprising certain novel features and combinations appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved-currycoinb Fig. 2, a like View, but showing the teeth projected; .Fig. 3, an end elevation; Fig. 4, a plan view; Fig. 5, a front elevation of a modified construction, and Fig. 6 a bottom planview of the same,
The numeral 1 designates'the back of my improved currycomb, and 2 is a handle suitably connected to said back.
' The numerals 3 designateTpin-teeth which are suitablyfastened to the back and are located in parallel rows, but any other disposition of the pins can be employed. 7
The numeral 4 designates a cleaning-plate which is provided with aseri es of apertures 5 in which the ends of the pin teeth work. At each corner of the cleaning-plate there is located an upright 6, which is suitably fastened I to said plate, being provided with a reduced will be seen that the disposition of the springs is such that they are retained in position against displacement and are not in the way of the teeth.
The device is extremely simple and compact and not liable to get out of order.
The operation is as follows: When the comb is applied to the animal, the pressure on the handle forces the back down against the action of the .springs, thereby projecting the pin-teeth through the openings in the cleaning-plate, so that the currying operation can be properly carried on. Immediately upon the comb being removed from the animal the spring lifts the back, so thatthe pin-teeth are retracted in the openings and kept properly housed.
Referring now to the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in this instance in place of the rows of pin-teeth I employ a series of plates 10, provided with teeth on their lower edges. For the holes or apertures in the cleaning-plate there are substituted longitudinally-extending slots 11, through which the plates 10 work.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a currycomb, the combination with a back, of a handle connected thereto, rows of teeth connected to the back, a cleaning-plate having openings through which the said teeth can pass, uprights connected to said cleaning-plate and provided with reduced portions to keep the teeth normally housed in the openings of the cleaning-plate and the movement of the back toward the cleaning-plate to project the teeth through the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LONNIE POWELL. Witnesses:
