Description
UNITED STATE S PATENT OFFICE.
N. HOMES, OF LAONA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING HANDLES TO SAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,828, dated October 16, 1866.
To all whoni it may concern:
Beit known that I, N. HOMES, of Laona, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Handles 5 and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference bein g had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part ot'this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of one end of a saw with my improved handle attached, part being broken away to show the construction, and showing in red lilies the position of the handle when arranged for carrying. Fig. 2 is a crosssection ofthe same, taken through the line x ir, Fig. 1. y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a neat, convenient, and substantial handle for crosseut-saws, which may be readily attached to and removed from the saw, and which may be used as a saw-set or a wrench, as occasion may require; and it consists, first, of a sawhandle constructed and arranged as hereinafter more full y described; second, inthe coinbination, with a saw-handle, of a saw-set or wrench, as hereinafter -described.
A is the saw-plate, whichis made in the usual manner, except that it has notches formed in its edge for the attachment ofthe handle.
B is the handle, to the lower end of the wooden part b1 of which is firmly attached a ferrule, b2.
The lower part of the ferrule b2 is made solid and is perforated, and has a screw-thread cut in said perforation, for the reception of the screw b3. Around the lower part of the ferrule b2 is formed a neck, upon -which is fitted the sleeve b4.
b5 is a frame, the upright arms of which are attached to or made solid with the opposite sides of the sleeve b4. The horizontal arm of this frame is perforated with a rectangular hole for the passage of the rectangular part of the screw b3.
The upper end of the forward arm of the frame b5 projects forward, and the said arm is slotted for the reception of the edge of the saw A, as shown in the drawings.
bG is a pin or rivet passin through the arm of the frame b5, which enters a notch in the saw-plate A, and holds the said plate securely connected to the handle B.
The rear end, bi, of the horizontal arm of the frame b5 projects outward and is made in the form of the jaw of a wrench, as shown in the drawings.
The upper part of the screw b3 has a screwi thread cut upon it, fitting into the thread cut in the lower part of the ferrule b2.
The lower part of the said screw b3 is made rectangular to lit into the rectangular hole in the horizontal arm of the frame b1". Upon the lower end ofthe screw b3 is formed a T-shaped head, one arin, b8, of which projects forward and is slotted for the reception of the edge of the saw-plate A.
tits into a notch in the saw-plate A, so that the saw-plate may be clamped between the pins bG and b9, and iirlnly held.
. The rear arm, bl", of the T-shaped head of the screw b3 projects outward, and is made in the forni ot' the jaw of a wrench.
Should the saw get fast in the log, the handle, when constructed in this way, can he quickly removed, and the saw drawn out without loss of time. The handle can also be removed from the end of the saw and attached to its back, as shown in red, for convenience in carrying it from place to place.
The jaws b7 and b10 enable it to be used as a saw-set or as a wrench, as occasion may require.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The saw-handle B, constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses ANsoN REED,
