TRUNK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters :Patent No.`v588,234, dated August 17, 1897'. v.Flpplieation iiled September 9, 1896. Serial No. 605,275. (No model.)
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk Attachments; and we do hereby deolare the following to be a full, clear, andrex-v act description of the invention,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trunks, the Object of the same being to provide an attachment therefor by means of which the tray will be elevated simultaneously with the raising of the lid of the trunk, and b e held at all times in a perfectly horizontal or level position.
The invention consists of a pair of traysupports located at each end of the trunk, links connecting said tray-supports with the usual ledge for supporting the tray, and counections between said tray-supports and the lid of the trunk whereby when theJV latter is raised said supports will be elevated sim ultaneously, and held at all times in a horizontal position.
The invention also consists in other details of construction land combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspectiveview of a trunk ,constructed according to our in! vention, showing the lid of the same in its raised position with the tray resting upon its supports. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the trayremoved. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section ofl the trunk in its closed position with the tray removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the links connecting the tray-supports with the lid, as shown in Fig. 4.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The trunk 1 is of the usual form and construction, having the lid- 2 hinged thereto and tray-supporting ledges 3 3 at each end thereof. Pivoted to the ledges 3 3 and eX-.
tending upwardly therefrom are links 4 4 of all times in a horizontal position.
equal lengths and having pivotally connected to them at theirupper ends the movable traysupports 5 5, eachV consisting of a strip of wood or metal L-shaped in cross-section with flangesor stops 6 6 at each end. A These movable t'ray-'supports 5 5 are connected to the inside of the lid or cover 2 by means of links 7 7 the same being provided with elongated slots 8 S'therein, through which the securing bolt or. screw 9 passes, providing for a small degree of lost motion, which is necessary when the lid 2 is closed. Adapted to rest upon the supports 5 5 is a tray 10 of ordinary construction, the same being held against displacement by the flanges or stops G 6.
AFrom the foregoing description it will be seen that when the lid 2 is elevated the movable supports 5 5, carrying the tray 10, will be raised simultaneously, holding said tray at This permits Of the ready removal of the contents of the body of the trunk 1 from the front side thereof. When thelid 2 is closed down upon the trunk 1,the supports 5 5,carrying the tray 10, are also lowered, and when in their closed position they rest upon the top surface of the ledges 3 3. It will be observed, however, that the supports 5 will reachthe ledges 3 before the lid 2 is entirely closed. In order, therefore, to permit the complete closure of the lid, the'slots 8 8 in the links 7 are provided.
In the modified form of our invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 we employ a peculiar form of link for connecting the supports 5 5 with the lid 2. The said link is-numbered 11 and diifers from thelinks 7 in that it is formed with a-T-shaped slot 12 at its upper end, having one portion thereof leading outwardly to the side of said link, so that said link may be disconnected from the screw or bolt 9 when desired. Vhen thus disconnected, there will be no movement of the supports 5 5 upon the raising or lowering of the lid 2. In this form of the invention we also employ a stop for preventing the falling of the lid 2 when it has been raised to its open position., This stop consists of a pair of links or plates 13 14, one pivoted tothe trunk 1 and the other to the lid 2 and both beingpivoted to one another at their outer ends.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have devised a simple, cheap,
and effective attachment for trunks, whereby the tray may be raised or lowered simulta neously with the opening or closing of the lid of the trunk, and whereby' the same is held at all tiines in a perfectly horizontal position.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a trunk havinga lid or cover hinged thereto and ledges or supports at each end thereof, of movable traysupports located at each end of the trunk, a pair of links of equal lengths pivoted to each of said supports and to the adjacent ledge on said trunk, and a link connecting each of said supports with said lid or cover having an elongated slot therein, through which its securing bolt or screw passes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a trunk having a lid or cover hinged thereto and ledges or supports at each end thereof, of movable traysupports located at each end of the trunk,l1av ing flanges 01 stops at their outer ends, a pair ot' links of equal lengths pivoted to each of said supports and to the adjacent ledge on said trunk, and a link connecting each of said supports with said lid or cover having an elongated slot therein through which its securing bolt or screw passes, and a tray adapted to it upon said supports and to lie between said iianges or stops, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification inthe presence of two subscrib- 35 ing witnesses.
