UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES VON DER LINDEN, OF RI-IINEBEOK, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO I-III\ISELF AND WILLIAM R. C. CLARK, OF SAME PLAGE.
CORKING APPARATUS.
SPEGIFIUATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,981, clated. August 10, 1897.
Application filed Februa.ry 15, 1897. Serial N0. 623,430. (N0 model.)
T0 all wh0m z't m-ay c0ncern:
Be i13 known that I, CHARLES VON DER LIN- DEN, of Rhinebeck, in the count-y 0f Duchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corking Apparatus, of whioh the following is a full, c1ear, and exaot description.
The object of this invention is 130 provide a superior devioe by Which the oorks of boles may be driven into p1ace and a device of that dass Which is particularly adapted for use in snm1l bottling establishrnents 01 by families eng-aged in preserving their domestic products.
The invention will bo fu1ly described hereinafter and defined in the c1aim.
Referenoe is tobe hac1 to the acoompanying drawings, forming a part of (bis specification, in whieh simil2u charaoters of reference indicate correspondin g p&rts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an eleva-tion showing the invention in open position and With parts in seotion. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side e1evation of oho 1ower par1: of the apparabus, and Fig. 4 is a, sectional view 011 the 1ine 4 4 of F1'g. l.
My invention, as shown in the drawings, has 1;W0 tapering sections a and b, eaoh With a tapering semieircular inner surfaoe which is the same in eaoh section, so that when he seotions are in olosed -position auniformlytapering interior space willbe provided. Eaeh section a and b ha-s wo 111 gs a and b, through whioh a pin c passes, by which the cwo sections a1e pivotally mounted to swing to open and olosed positions, as shown in the drawings. Pivoted t0 a Ing d 011 the section a is a clamping-arm d, provided With a ourved portion (P, adapted so be sprang around a projection d, by whioh the clamping-arm may be operated. Vhen oho secoions are engaged Wih eaoh otherthe elamping-arm d is moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, whereby the seetions are hold in rigid connection with each other.
The 10W@1 end of each section is provided With a semioiroular fiange e. The flanges e match wiuh each ooher when the sections are o1osed to form a cirou12u dish-shaped eavity oapable of receiving the mouth of the bott1e, as indicated by doted 1ines in Fig. 1. The
upper end of ehe section Z) is provided With a rigidly-secured circular head f, 'adapted 120 extend over 'uhe sect ion a when the sections are moved together, so as to eompletely o1ose the upper end of the chamber formed by the seotions a and b. The seetion b has therefore an overhanging semicircular 1edge formed by the head f and completely covering the upper end of Lhe seotion a, as shown best in Fig. 4.
The headfis provided With a oentral opening fromm whioh a boss g extends upwardly. The boss g is elongated considerably and serves to hold a slidable rod 01' plunger h firm1y, so that the roc1 may move truly through the center of ehe spaoe inclosed by 13119 sections ca and b in driving'the cork. The upper end of the rod h is provided With a head z, which reeeives the rod in an orifice in the head and whioh is removably hold thereon by a eotterpin z" or by any other fastening device. The headi may be easily removed frorn the rod h, so as to p1ace 01 displace a, washer by whioh the position whioh alle lower end of the rod or plunger h ocoupies with reference to the caviny formed by the flamges e may be regulated.
In using the apparatus the corks are, as usual, soaked before being applied to the bot'1e, after which the plunger, having been adjusted as shown in the drawings, is raised and one of the corks is plaoed between the' seetions a and b when open. The sections are now c1osed so as t0 hold the cork firmly, the flang' es e are made 170 embrace the mouth of the bottle, and the head z' is struck so as 130 drive the rod h down into the spaoe between the sections a and b, whioh will foroe the cork into the neck of the bont1e. If 111 is desired to drive the cork 00m plete1y within the botle,so that the upper end of the cork Will 1ie flush Wit-h the mouth of ohe bottle, the washer z is removed whereupon tl1e lower extremity of the rod h will move to a point directly ab ehe mouth of the bottle. If, however, it is desi1:ed that a art of the oork project upwardly fron1 the boto1e, one washer 5 01 any number of washers z" may be swung 011 the rod h by removing the head z. This will limit the downward movement of 'ol1e rod h am]. cause is lower end to move 130 a point above the mouth of the bottle, which point Will be the 0f one 0f the seetions a11d overhanging the 15 corresponding end 0f the other section, the cireular head having a boss rising centrally therefrom and surrounding an opening therein a p1nnge1 sliding through the b0ss and movable centrally within the space between 20 the two seetions, a head removably secured 130 the upper end of the' plunger and a washer placed 011 the plunger 130 1imit the downward movement thereof.
