GROCERS BIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 399,197, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed May 21, 1888. $eria1 No. $14,873. ('No meclel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIAX BERRY HAW- KIXS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grocers Bins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in grocers cans or bins, the object of the invention being to produce a cheap, durable, and efficient groccrs bin having a bottom which may be quickly raised or lowered to adapt the bin to the vz'trying amount ot contents as, for instance, as the contents of the bin are reduced or lowered the supplemental bottom can be raised to bring the contents flush with the top of the bin, where they are easily accessible without the trouble and inconvenience of reaching down inside, as is necessary with mont of the parts.
in the drawings, A represents the side of the bin, having the fixed cross-piece E at the lower end.
1 is the movable bottom.
I.) is a metallic bracket, to which the movablc bottom is secured, and C is the screw which passes through the bottom 13 and bracket 1), and operates to raise and lower the bottom l3. A packing, I), of an 5' suitable material, (preferably heathen) is secured. to the periphery of the movable bottom and insures a tight litbet-wccn the bottom l5 and sides of the can, as is necessary when the material or contents in the can is flour or any finely-pulverized substance. The bar E is fastened permanently across the lower end of the can, and
acts as a support for thelowerend of the bottom-adjusting screw 0, which is seated in a socket, c, secured to the said cross-piece. This socket may be constructed in halves and engaged with a reduced portion of the screw, as shown atf, Fig. 3, which prevents the possibility of the end of the screw being unseated.
F is a halt-cover or permanent section of the can-top, through which the screw C is extended, and which acts as a bearing for the upper end of the screw to retain it in avertical line. The bracket D, when the screw is at one side of the center or? the bin, as shown in Fig. l, is rc-en'forccd at one side, (its shortest sidc,) as shown at (Z Fig. 1, so as to act as a weight to counterbalance the weight at the opposite side of the bracket or bottom, to prevent the bottom from tippingwhen the can is filled. This bracket D has an upwardlyprojecting boss, (1, with a screw-threaded central opening formed therein, through which the screw C extends, and which forms a long bearing therefor.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the screw is shown as located at one side of the center of the bin, extended through the halt-cover F, and provided with a hand-wheel, c, by which to operate it, while in Fig. 3 the screw O is shown as directly central with relation to the center of the bin and as considerably shorter than the screw shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and as having a square end to be engaged by a key, 71, which .is removable. (Shown, for convenience, in Fig. 3 as ready to engage the screw-head.) The construction illustrated in Fig. is preferable, as the screw will be hid from view by the contents of the bin, and when the contents are used or removed sutliciently to expose the top of the screw the key will be applied and the screw turned to bring the contents flush with the top of the bin.
The casing or side A of the bin will be constructed of any suitable material, preferably galvanized iron, and will be of the usual form. The movable bottom 13 will be secured to the supporting-bracket l) by screws (1 or otherwise. The screw maybe located centrally with relation to the center of the casing, or maybe located at one side the center, and it may extend through the half-cover F and be provided with awheel to turn it; or it may be short, as i llustratcd in Fig. 3, and have a tubular body A, having the cross-piece E, se-
cured at the lower end, the socket e, secured to said cross-piece, the vertical screw 0, loosely seated at its lower end in said socket, having a square or angular head to receive a similarly-shaped socket of a key, the metal bracket D, having a screw-threaded boss, outwardlyextended arms mounted upon the screw and adapted to be raised or lowered thereby as the screw is turned, the bottom B, secured to the arms of said bracket, and the flexible annular packing-ring Z), secured to the periphery of said bottom B and projecting above the upper face of said bottom, all substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
