To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES C. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Liberty, in the county of Jasper, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Packing- Head Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such ,as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in packing machinery and particularly to devices for placing and holding barrel heads while the same are being fastened in position.

One object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character which can be readily tilted to permit the barrel to be placed thereunder.

Another object is to provide a device which can beeasily operated to press the barrel head down into position so thatthe contents of the barrel will 7 be properly packed and the easy fastening of the barrel heads accomplished.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a suitable base to which are secured the parallel upright brackets 11. Pivotally mounted on the upper ends of the brackets are the arms 12, these arms having secured to their upper ends the transversely arranged guide plate 13. Formed vertically through this guide plate is a central threaded opening, and on each side of this opening are formed the smaller smooth bore openings 15. Disposed below the plate 13 is a ring 16 to which is secured a transversely extending plate 17 the portion of said plate within the ring being depressed so that its bottom face is disposed flush with the bottom face ofnthe ring. 13 are the guide rods 18, theupper ends of said rods being secured to a disk 19 disposed above the plate 13. Secured to the ring 16 on each side of the plate 13 are additional vertlcal rods 20, these rods having their upper ends also secured to the disk 19. Disposed vertically through the disk 19, the threaded opening 14: and secured at its lower end centrally to the plate 17, is a pressure screw 21. The upper end of this screw has a suitable head 22 which carries a transversely slidable handle bar 23.

In the operation of the device the same is swung to one side on the pivotal connectlons between the brackets 11 and the arms 12, and a barrel of fruit or vegetables placed on the base between the brackets. The dev1ce is then swung upwardly until the ring 16 is disposed over the barrel. The head of the barrel is then placed in position and the screw 21 rotated by means of the handle bar 23 to force the ring down against the barrel head. The screw is rotated sufliciently to cause the ring 16 to press the barrel head against the top of the fruit or vegetables in the barrel and into proper position. The process of applying suitable fasteners should now he proceeded with without danger of displacement of the barrel heads. When the barrel head has been properly secured, the ring 16 is raised by means of the screw 21, the barrel removed, and another one substituted, it of course being understood that the device is swung to one side to permit this removal and substitution.

While I have shown the arms 12 pivoted to the brackets 11 at a height near the top of the barrel, it will be understood that the brackets may be made shorter and the arms 12 longer so that the pivot points will be lower down.

What is claimed is:
