APPARATUS FOR SHARPENING AND DRESSING DRILL-BITS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,909, dated August 10, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belmore, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Sharpening and Dressing Drill-Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improvement properly arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the drill-clamp and a chain or cord connected to the drill, a portion of the drill being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the jaw-head, showing the drill in transverse section and in position to be clamped. Fig. 4 is a View of a forge.
The present invention has relation to forgecranes and clamps; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and-particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the vertical post of the crane, to the upper end or portion of which is attached the jib a, and is supported in proper horizontal position by means of the ordinary braces b. Upon the vertical post A is attached the windlass B by means of suitable brackets, such as c, said Windlass being provided with an ordinary ratchet-wheel c", which holds the windlass against rotation by means of the pawl or detent (Z. The bottom or lower end of the post A is journaled in the ordinary manner, so that it will rotate upon its axis in the usual manner.
The buffer or stop-head D may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and is held in an upright position by being securely attached at its bottom or lower end to a suitable foundation, and may be braced, so as to provide suitable resistance, as hereinafter described. At a point from the bufier or stop-head D is located an anvil, such as E,
which anvil is supported at the required height and may be of the ordinary form, reference being had to the kind of work designed to be done.
The drill F shown in the drawings is of the ordinary kind and style, but it will be understood that the drill proper forms no particular part of the present invention, except it is shown to illustrate the operation of the device. Between the anvil E and the bufier or stop-head D is located the clamping-head G, which clamping-head is held in an upright position in any suitable and convenient manner and is provided with the parallel members f, which members are located a short distance apart and form a space of sufficient size to allow the drill F to be placed between the members f, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
For the purpose of clamping the drill F, so as to securely hold it in the desired position at the time it is being forged or otherwise operated upon, the clamping-jaws g are provided, which clamping-jaws move back and forth toward and from each other, said jaws sliding upon the members f. For the purpose of operating the jaws g the L-shaped levers g are pivotally attached to said jaws g and are located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 3. The lower horizontal portions of the L-shaped levers g are connected together by means of a suitable cross-bolt or rivet 9 to which rivet is attached the link 9 To the bottom or lower end of the link 9 is pivotally attached the lever h, which lever is fulcrumed to the head G or its equivalent. It will be understood that when the lever h is moved upward at its outer end its inner end will be lowered, which movement causes the top or upper ends of the L-shaped levers g to be moved toward each other, carrying with them the jaws g. \Vhen the jaws have traveled toward each other a sufficient distance, the drill F will be securely clamped in the position placed, which may be either sidewise or lengthwise transversely to the drill. For the purpose of holding the jaws in proper position to clamp the drill the notched bar h is provided, which notched bar may be located substantially as shown in the drawings. It will be understood that a suitable plate or catch, such as h should be attached to the lever h,
said plate or catch being for the purpose of engagement with the teeth formed upon the toothed bar It.
' For the purpose of lifting the drill F off from the anvil for any purpose the liftinghead H is provided and is located directly below the drill and is operated by means of the lever 11, which lever is connected to the lifting-head by means of the links H said links being located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 1, but it will be understood that they may be differently arranged without departing from the nature of my invention. The lever H is fulcrumed to the head G or its equivalent.
For the purpose of preventing the drill from moving laterally at its upper end the upright posts 70 are provided, which upright posts are spaced so as to allow the drill to get between said posts. The posts-are preferably attached to the block K, which block is held in an upright position in any convenient and well-known manner. It will be understood that by providing the block K and the posts 70 the drill will be held so that its upper end will come against the buffer D. For the purpose of lifting the upper end of the drill independent of the crane and adjust the angularity of said drill the crank-bar K is provided, which crank bar is properly journaled to the block K and is provided with the operating-crank 7a.
For the purpose of properly bracing the bufier the brace-bars Z0 are provided and may be located substantially as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of connecting the drill F to the elevating chain or cord L the clamp L is provided, which clamp is located around the drill and the chain or cord L connected to the clamp and located around the drill.
It will be understood that as the Windlass B is rotated in one direction the drill F will be elevated, and when sufficiently elevated it is free to be swung to any desired point within the limits of the crane proper and may be carried to the forge A or any other desired point.
For the purpose of preventing any injury to the upper end of the drill stock or bit the butter D may be covered with brass or other metal of suflicient softness to prevent injury. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An apparatus for sharpening and dressing drill-bits, comprising a crane provided with an elevating chain or cord, a butter or stop-block, the clamping-head G, provided with jaws g, L-shaped levers pivoted to the jaws, an operating-lever connected intermediately to the L-shaped levers, and means for holding the jaws in fixed adjustment, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. An apparatus for sharpening and dressing drill-bits, comprising a clamping-head provided with jaws, and means for operating the jaws, the lifting-head H, and means for operating the lifting-head, the block K, provided with the guide-posts k, and the crankbar K, and a buffer, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. An apparatus for sharpening and dressing drill-bits, comprising a buffer or stopblock, a clamping-head provided with clamping-jaws, and means for operating the j aws, a crank-bar, and a lifting-crane provided with an elevating chain or cord, and the clamp L, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
