REGINALD H. FILMER, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,804, dated August 10, 1897.
A li tion filed December 28, 1896. Serial No. 617,260. (No model.) Patented in England October 29, 1896, No. 24,126.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REGINALD HARRY FIL- MER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes Made of Cardboard, Leather- Board, and such Like Materials, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in England, No. 24,126, dated October 29, 1896,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
The invention has for its object improvements in folding boxes made in one piece of cardboard, leather-board, and such like ma: terials, with a view to obtain simplicity of construction combined with facility for erecting the box for use and for folding the same for packing or storing.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of thezblank shaped and creased or scored according to my invention and provided with a lid or cover and small flaps around the top of the body, as is sometimes done. Fig. 2 is a plan of the box erected for use and with the lid or cover open and turned back. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan, and Fig. 5 is an end view, of the box partly folded; and Fig. 6 shows the same completely folded for packing or storage. Figs. 2 to 6 are drawn to a larger scale than Fig. 1.
The blank (see Fig. 1) is cut to the shape required and scored or creased on lines Cb a b b at the junction of the bottom cwith the sides d d and inner end flaps e e, on the lines d at the junction of the sides d dwith the outer end flaps ff, on the line 61 at the junction of the top of the side (I with the small flap g, on the line (1 at the junction of the side d with the lid or cover h, on the lines f f at the junction of the topsof the outer end fiapsff with the small flaps f f and on the lines 9 g at the junction of the lid or cover h with the descending small outer flaps 9 The blank thus scored or creased is folded on the lines of the said creases or scores to produce a box and lid or cover, as is well understood.
I would here remark that the blank as above described is of known construction and forms no part of my invention separately considered, and I would further remark that the improved box may be made without the flaps f g and lid or cover h, and it may be used with a separately-formed lid or cover. 7
According to my present invention I also score or crease the blank on the lines 2' 1;, which for convenience of manufacture are carried across the inner end flaps e, as well as the outer end flaps fand small top flaps f although the portions of said scorings or crea'sings 2' iacross the outer end flaps f and small top fiapsf are alone used. I further, according to the substance of the material used, make one or more scores or creasings j across the center of the bottom 0 and inner end flaps e c with a view to enable such parts to be folded on said line j either downward, as shown in the drawings, or in the contrary direction. The inner end flaps c c for packing or storage are folded inward on the lines I), as shown. I also, after having folded the inner end flaps e e inward, cement, rivet, or
otherwise fasten the overlapping portions of the outer end flaps f f together and fold them either inward, as shown, on the lines 2' i or outward, if desired. The blank may also be perforated at k k on the inner and outer end flaps e e f f, as shown, or in other convenient arrangement and tapes or cords Z, knotted at one end, threaded through such holes, as shown in Figs. 2 to 5, so as to aiford facility for holding the inner end flaps e 6 against the outer end flaps f f, thus fixing the parts in position for use, and at the same time these tapes or cords may be used for tying the lid or cover on the box and for carrying the same.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letter Patent 1s The herein-described foldingbox, comprising the undivided bottom 0 and integral inner end flaps e, continuously scored transversely at j, the sides cl, (1 each having integral outer end flapsfscored at i, the said bottom, sides and end flaps being scored so as to permit them to be set up in box form and permit of the folding of the box, when set up, along the lines of the scorings j and 2', the scorings 11, when the box is set up or folded being alined with the scoring j in the end flaps, substantially as set forth.
