UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT XV. BRASH, OF NElVARK, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ELEVATOR-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 587,697, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed February 20, 1897. Serial No. 624,342. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. BRASH, a citizen of the United States, residing atNewark, in the county of Marshall and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator-Buckets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in elevator cups or buckets; and it consists in the particular manner of constructing the same, whereby it is made or shaped from a single blank of sheet metal bent upon itself in such manneras to reinforce the upper edge of the cup or bucket and the end flaps so disposed that the bolts which secure the bucket to the belt or endless chain will also act to hold said flaps in place, and consequently present a rigid structure in connection with the extensions forming reinforcing-pieces at the lower corners to receive the wear, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bucket constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section viewed through the bucket. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the bucket is shaped.
As hereinbefore stated,my improved bucket is made up from a single sheet of malleable metal which is cut into the blank illustrated in Fig. 4. This blank is first bent upon the dotted line 1, so that the strip 2, which reinforces the upper edge of the bucket, will lie against the body portion thereof when the said bucket is formed. The other part of the blank is bent upon the dotted line inclicated thereon to present the front 3 of the bucket, sides 4 4, bottom 5, and back 6. After the strip 2 is turned down the blank is bent on the line a and then on the line b, after which the sides 4 are bent upon the lines 0 to engage the edges of the back 6, after which the said sides are bent upon the lines (Z to bring the flaps 7 .against the back 6, and then the flange or extension 8 of the back is turned over to embrace the upper ends of flaps 7 The part of the blank which forms the sides 4 is extended at its inner edge, as shown, so that the said extension can be bent under upon the depending flange 9 of the bottom and then both turned upon said bottom to securely hold the parts at these points and also reinforce the bottom of the bucket. In forming this joint the end of the metal will be turned up against the back, as shown at 10, and provide an increased thickness of metal at these corners, which are apt to receive the wear when the bucket is in use. The extension or flap 8 is provided with boltholes 11, that register with corresponding holes 12 and 13 in the side fiap's'and back of the bucket, respectively. The bolts which secure the bucket in place upon the belt or endless chain pass through these bolt-holes and will act to securely hold the flaps in enthis special contour or configuration of the blank illustrated in Fig. ,4 I provide a bucket (illustrated in Fig. 1) which is substantially rectangular, the front and upper edges of the sides being inclined.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An elevator-bucket substantially rectangular in shape, made from a single sheet of metal or blank presenting the parts 3 and 4 4 contiguous with the straight section 2at the outer edge thereof, including the parts 5, 6, and 8, on a line with the part 3, side flaps 7 7, and extensions or flaps 9 9 at the sides of the as and for the purpose specified.
2. A bucket made up of a single sheetor blank of metal, one edge of which isbent said blank having extensions? 7 and 8, and. contiguous extensions at the adjoining ed of the bottom and sides which are cri upon each other when the blank'is jfqha, to form a bucket, and presentfreiiiforcf part 5 which forms the bottom of the bucket, v n
upon itself to provide the reinforcing-strip 2,
gagement with the body of the bucket and therefore present a very rigid structure. By
pieces at the lower rear corners thereof, the specification in the presence of two subscribflaps 7 being bent against the back of the ing witnesses. bucket and the flap 8 turned over to embrace the flaps 7, the said flaps and back having ALBERF BRASH' 5 bolt-holes which register, substantially as Witnesses:
shown and for the purpose set forth. OLIVER RIGGLE,
In testimony whereof I have signed this P. O. HOWELL.
