UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
PAULINE GRAYSON HERCI-IT, OF BOGOTA, NEW JERSEY.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,310, dated August 3, 189'?.
Application led February 17, 1897. Serial No. 623,806. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAULINE GRAvsoN HERCHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bogota, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Trousers or Knickerbockers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to trousers; and its yobject is to provide ordinary trousers with attachments whereby they may be readily converted into knee-pants or knickerbockers.
The characteristic features of my invention will be fully disclosed hereinafter and defined in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates my improvement in its application to the uses of a bicycle-rider, one leg of the trousers being drawn up to the position of knee-pants and the other leg being in its normal position, the elevating attachment being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elev'ation of a portion of a trousersleg provided with my improvement and slitted vertically and horizontally to clearly show the manner of attaching it to the trousers.
The reference-numeral 1 indicates a strip of tape or like material adapted to be attached in any suitable manner to the inner side of a trousers-leg and constituting the body of the attachment. This tape 1 is bent upon itself at the points 2 2 to form vertical or pendent side portions 3 3, the latter being connected by or in close proximity to the cross-strip 4. The upper ends of the sides 3 3 are each provided with a loop or ring 5, adapted to be sewed to the inner faces of the side seams 6 of the trousers, while the horizontal crosspiece 4: of the tape is suitably secured to the rear lower edges of the trousers-leg, as shown in Fig. 2.
7 indicates a cord, one end S of which is secured to the upper end of one of the tapesections 3, from whence it extends down, passing through eyelets 9 and 10, thence across the horizontal section of the tape 1,
which is provid ed with eyelets 11, and thence up through eyelets 12 to the upper end of the other tape-section 3. The horizontal portion 4 of the tape is sewed at both its top and bottom edges 13 and 14 to inolose and secure the cord 7, as shown in Fig. 2.
15 indicates buttons preferably sewed with'- in the front lower edge of the trousers-leg and adapted, when necessary, to be engaged by the cord 7 to sustain the trousers in elevated position.
The operation and utility of my invention will be obvious from Fig. l, in which one leg of the trousers is shown elevated, while the other leg is in its normal position.
It is well known that many bicycle-riders are in the habit of riding to their business places in the well-known knickerbocker bicycle-suits, and are compelled to appear in such suits throughout the day. By the use of my improvements the ease and freedom of knickerbockers is insured while riding, after which the trousers may be readily converted into a pair of trousers of ordinary appearance, the elevating devices being entirely concealed and causing no inconvenience to the wearer.
When the legs of the trousers are elevated by pulling on the cord 7, the surplus of slack .of the latter is wound around the buttons 15 and thus secured.
While I have shown the cord or cords 7 as passing througheyelet-holes in the strip or tape and have shown buttons 15 for fastening the strings (after the lower leg portions of the trousers are elevated) it will be readily understood that I may employ any desirable means for holding and guiding the cord or cords and any suitable means for securing or fastening the cord or cords when the trousers shall have been converted into knickerbockers.
The operation of elevating the trousers-leg is readily performed by drawing upward the cord or cords, which action not only gathers up and holds in the position required the gathered-up portion of the garment, but gathers in the back half or portion of the trousersleg sufficiently to make said gathered portion fit snugly about the leg of the wearer, thus furnishing a neat and desirable appearance.
IOO
The surplus or slack portion of the cord or cords may then be secured to the buttons l5 or to any other suitable securing means.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a trousers-leg, of a strap, or tape, comprising vertical pendentportions, secured along the seams of the trousers, and a transverse portion secured to the rear lower edge of the trousers, suitablyguided cord or cords, and means for securing the slack of said cord or cords.
2. A trousers attachment,co1nprising a tape or strip consist-ing of Vertical portions adapted to be sewed to the inner face of the side seams of a trousers-leg, and a transverse portion adapted to be sewed to the rear lower edge of the trousers-leg, each end of the trans verse portion terminating in a right-angular fold to form said vertical portions, said folds being provided With eyelets for securing them in position, in combination with a cord, the ends of Which are fastened to the upper ends of the Vertical strip portions, said cord passing freely through openings in both the vertical and transverse portions and through the eyelets in the folds, and said cord being so secured and arranged, that by pulling upward on the cord the back-half portion of the trousers-leg will be gathered in at the saine time that the remaining portion of the trousers-leg is gathered up, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a trousers-leg, of a strip or tape, comprising Vertical pendent portions secured along the seams of the trousers, and a transverse portion secured to the rear lower edge of the trousers, and an elevating-cord secured at its ends to the tape and passing through openings in the strip or tape, so that by pulling upward on the said cord the back-half portion of the trousers-leg Will be gathered in at the same time that the remaining portion of the trousers-leg is gathered up and secured by said cord and fastening devices for said cord, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix iny signature in presence of two Witnesses.
