No. 587,122, Patented July 27, 1897.

IVILLIAM G. I-IINGHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,122, dated July 27, 1897.
Application filed March 16, l 8 9 6- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. I-IINGHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
This invention relates to an improved trick cigar, the object of the invention being to supply a durable article which contains an advertisement placed and displayed in such a manner as to prevent its removal without destroying the symmetry of the device. The article is sufficiently attractive in contour and general appearance to make it of value to a recipient, whereby it will be kept and exhibited as an ornamental novelty and not thrown away or destroyed, as advertisingcards generally are.
The invention will be hereinafterfully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims. i
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the preferred form of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a solid block or core A, which is composed, preferably, of wood, but which may be made of papier-Inach, celluloid, or any other suitable light-weight substance.
The core A in its'preferred form is shaped precisely like an ordinary cigar, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and theexposed end portion a is roughened and stained to resemble a filling of tobacco. Having supplied the core A, it is covered or coated by means of a paper wrapper B, which is arranged spirally upon said core in such a manner as to form an exact imitation ofa cigar, the said covering being previously stained and scented in imitation of a strip of tobacco andits end portions being pasted to the core A to prevent its removal therefrom.
Having coated or covered the core A, aband Serial No. 583,288. (No model.)
C is pasted around the wrapper B at a point approximating the center of the cigar-shaped structure. This said band is provided upon its outer surface with any suitable advertising matter 0. i
I do not confine myself to the specific contour of the articles illustrated in the drawings, as I believe that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to make changes in the mere shape of the core or block A; but I do confine myself to the use of a solid filling representing a body of tobacco with a wrapper and an advertising-band thereon.
I am aware that boxes and other articles of cigar shape have been made, and I do not claim, broadly, as my invention an imitation cigar, but the particular manner in which I produce a cheaper and a more complete article. I believe it to be new and original.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An advertising or trick cigar comprising a solid core a wrapper covering the core in imitation of the natural-leaf tobacco, the lighting end of the core being made to resemble an ordinary tobacco-filler.
2. An advertising or trick cigar comprising a solid core, a wrapper covering the core in imitation of the natural-leaf tobacco, the lighting end of the core being made to resemble an ordinary tobacco-filler and the other end in imitation of the month end of a cigar.
3. An advertising or trick cigar comprising a solid core; a wrapper covering the core in imitation of the natural-leaf tobacco, the lighting end of the core being made to resemble an ordinary tobacco-filler and the other end twisted in imitation of the month end of a cigar, the whole being scented in imitation of a genuine tobacco cigar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventi'onI have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of March, 1896.
Witnesses:
M. G. MAOLEAN, S. SCHWARTZ.
