UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. GOLDBAUM, OF TUCSON, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
FOLDING EGG-CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,843, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed December 5,1896. Sellitl N- 6l4,590| (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH J. GOLDBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuoson, in the county of Pima, Arizona Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Egg-Crates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention has relation to improvements in the construction of folding egg crates or cases; and the object is, as the name indicates, to provide a crate that can be folded for return transportation to the shipper.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-numerals indicate the same parts of the invention in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved egg-crate. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 shows the crate as it appears when folded.
1 1 represent the sides of the crate, and 2 2 the ends, which are pivoted to the sides by the ,bent wire rods l 4:, which form thehinges. These wire rods are secured to the contiguous edges of the sides and ends by a series of wire staples, which allow said rod to turn freely in them when the crate is folded. The
end pieces 2 2 are formed with projecting tongues 5 5, which engage the corresponding recesses 6 0 in the contiguous ends of the side pieces 1 1.
'7 represents one half of the top or cover, and S the other half. Both of these covers are formed with tongues J 9, which engage corresponding recesses 10 10 in the contiguous edges of the side pieces, and both covers '7 and S are pivoted to their respective side pieces by a bent rod 12, which forms the hinge, and said rods are secured at alternate points to the covers and sides by staples 13.
1% llrepresent guardwires secured by staples to the hinged covers, their ends bein g formed with projecting integral end loops 16, which receive the hooked ends 17 17 of a V-shaped hook 18, the looped end 19 of which is secured at each end of the crate by a bolt and nut 20 to securely hold the covers in place.
The bottom of the crate is an exact duplicate of the top, as above described, and when these parts are opened out and folded back on the outside of the side pieces the whole crate may be folded compactly, as shown in Fig. 4.
The usual central transverse partition is employed, which divides the crate into two compartments, and it is pivoted to the side pieces by the bent rods 22 in the same manner as the end pieces, so that when the crate is folded this portion lies snugly in between the sides.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.-
Ilavin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
A folding crate, comprising the sides 1 1 and the ends 2 2 hinged together at their contiguous edges by the bent rods 4 4, the hinged top pieces 7 and 8 provided with the guardwires 14: 14, formed with projecting integral end loops 16, in combination with the bolt 20 and the V-shaped hook 18, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH J. GOLDBAUM.
