Description

(No Model.)
A. E. PAUVER. ADJUSTABLE PIPE WRENCH.
Patented July 20,1897.
' portion 2 and the shank portion 3.
UNiirin STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDIS E. FAUVER, OF NOCKENUT, TEXAS.
ADJUSTABLE PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 586,597, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed December 13, 1896. Serial No. 616,147. (No model) To roZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1, atoms E. FAUVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nockenut, in the county of \Vilson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Piperenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pipe-wrenches, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient wrench of the character referred to in which the opposing jaws of the wrench are maintained at an angle to each other, so that they converge toward their extremities, thus enabling a firmer hold to be obtained upon the pipe or other article to be gripped by said jaws.
The invention consists in an improved pipewrench embodying certain novel features and details of construction, as hereinafter more particularly set forth, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable jaw.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the stock of the wrench, comprising the handle The handle portion 2 may be straight, but for the purpose of carrying out the invention the shank portion is curved in the arc of a circle and is provided with a longitudinal slot 4:. At the end of the shank o is the stationary jaw 5, which projects on the concaved side of the shank 3.
6 designates the movable or adjustable jaw, which extends from the concaved side of the shank 3 and is provided upon its working surface with ratchet-shaped teeth 7, each having one inclined and one square or straight edge, the said teeth facinginward toward the shank, so as to more effectually grip the pipe or other article. The adjustable jaw 6 is provided with a reduced shank 8, which passes through the slot 1 in the shank 3, where it is provided upon the convex side of the shank 3 with a cross-pin 9, forming .a stop, which bears against the convex side of the shank 3 for preventing the adjustable jaw 6 from rocking beyond a certain angle relative to the shank 3.
The shank 3 is provided upon its concaved side with a plurality of teeth 10 for engagement with corresponding teeth 11 on the opposite sides of the adjustable jaw 6, the teeth 11 being arranged at or near the rear side of the jaw 6, while the pin 9 is arranged near the front edge thereofiand on the opposite side of the shank 3, the parts 9 and 11 constituting bearing-points for preventing the rocking of the adjustable jaw away from the pipe or other article while the wrench is in operation. By rocking the jaw 6 toward the jaw 5 the teeth 11 may be disengaged from the teeth 10, thereby permitting the jaw 6 to be adjusted longitudinally of the shank 3 and placed in engagement with any particular tooth on the Shank 3.
By reason of the construction above described the working faces of the jaws 5 and (3 are maintained at an angle to each other, thus increasing the efficiency of the wrench by obtaining a firmer hold upon the pipe or other article. The teeth 10 also act to grip the said pipe, and thus increase the efficiency of the wrench.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pipe-wrench, a handle or stock having a curved and toothed shank provided with a longitudinal slot opening out at the toothed side of the shank, and a fixed jaw at the extremity of said shank, in combination with a movable jaw having a reduced portion slidingly fitted in said slot, one or more teeth on said movable jaw at each side of the reduced portion for engaging the toothed shank, and a pin carried by the shank at each side of the slot of the movable jaw and bearing against the convex side of the wrench-shank, substantially as described.
2. In a pipe-wrench, a handle or stock having a curved shank provided upon its concaved side with teeth and also provided with a longitudinal slot, dividing the teeth into two rows and a stationary jaw at the extremity of said shank, in combination with a movable jaw having a reduced portion slidingly fitted. Intestimony whereof I have signed this in said slot, and provided With teeth'a-t or near specification in the presence of two subscrib- Io its rear side for engaging the teeth 01": the ing Witnesses.
