UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY BRUSSTAR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
RUDDER AND SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,650, dated July 6, '1897.
Application filed January 11, 1897. Serial No. 618,861. [No model.)
To all whom, it may] concern.
Be it known that I, `HENRY BRUssrAR, a
.citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rudders and Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to rudders, and particularly to that class employed on barges and the like, the object of this device being to provide a rudder which has sufficient play to allow it to float freely, but at the same time providing means for preventing the displacement of the rudder and post.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rudder-post and support in combination, whereby the friction is minimized, since the end of the post alone has a bearing-surface on the bracket or support.
A further object is to secure the abovenamed advantages by a construction which will prove strong, durable, and efcient, as well as comparatively inexpensive to produce and sustain.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, as well as in the arrangement and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth, and specifically embodied in the annexed claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiicatiomwherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several vieWs,in which Figure 1 is a side view of the rear section of a barge with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section illustrating in detail the several elements of the combination partially disconnected, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View showing a modied bearing.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the boat orbarge, which may be of any well-known construction, and 2 indicates the keel thereof. Secured to the rear of the keel is a bracket 3, composed of a strap of metal having ears 4,
turned up to embrace the sides of the keel, and through which bolts or rivets are secured to hold the bracket in place. VThe bracket is further secured by being bolted to the lower edge of the keel. By extending the bracket rearwardly and forming the loop 5 I produce a bearing-surface 6 for the end of the rudderbolt, (to be hereinafter described,) while that portion of the loop at 7 is apertured to receive the end of the bearing-post, as clearly shown. The upper end of the bracket is bent to lie against the en d of the keel or casing, Where it is secured in any suitable manner to sustain the Weight of the rudder and the strain incident to its manipulation.
The rudder 8 is of ordinary construction, the post 9 having the forked ends 10, which embrace the'body of the rudder at diametrically opposite points, and a bolt or several bolts are passed through these members to secure the parts in position. When the rudder is thus supplied with its post, the end of the post is passed through the aperture and is seated on the bearing-surface 6. A washer 12 and a Cotter-pin 13 are then applied in a manner to allow free movement of the rudder, yet preventing its displacement.
The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be noted that changes in the proportions and other details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance, the end a of the post may be reduced and the bracket may haveasocket h, such construction reducing the friction between the parts.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination, a bracket secured to the keel and having a bearing-surface, said bracket being extended and apertured, a rudder having a post operating through the aperture of the bracket and resting on the bearing-surface of the bracket, and means for securing the rudder against displacement, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a barge, a bracket secured to its keel, a bearing` and keeper In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature n formed by the bracket, a rudder having its in presence of tWo Witnesses.
post operatinff tllrouwh the keeper and resti 1 ing on the bebaring o? the bracket, a Washer HENRY BRUSSVl AR' 5 for holding the post in position and a eotter- Witnesses:
pin for holding the Washer in place, substztn- CHAS. S. KNODE,
tially as described. F. S. APPLEMAN.
