VEST BISSELL, OF JERSEY OITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO A. B. BEADLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,460, dated June 29, 1897. Application iiled February l, 1897. Serial No. 621,443. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WEST BissnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey Oity, Hudson county, and State of N ew .Ierse y, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Paper Protectors or Holders, of Which the following is a specification.
In my invention use is made of a carrier or frame of metal, cardboard, wood, or other suitable material Which is provided With a sticky, Wet, or otherwise suitably-prepared surface or coating for destroying flies and the like, together With guards, Wires, or strips fastened to said frame or carrier, preferably at or near its edges and arched over or other- Wise carried above said surface and so disposed as to form a protection above said surface or coating. A
Objects of the invention are to prevent accidental contact of persons and things With the fly-destroying surface or coating and to afford convenient means for transporting and suspending the same.
My invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following descripti on,taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in Which- Figures l, 2, and 3 are respectively perspective, under side plan, and central transverse sectional views, of a fly-paper holder or protector embodying features of my invention. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a perspective and a side view of two knockdoivn holders or protectors embodying features of myinvention. Fig. 6 is a detached view illustrating upon an enlarged scale one of the detail parts of the construction shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a similar View of another part. Fig. S is a perspective view illustrating the construction of the device shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a perspective view illustrating upon an enlarged scale one of the details of construction of Fig. 5. Fig. lO is a per* spective view illustrating a detail of construction, and Fig. 1l is a perspective view illustrating sockets for the detachable reception of the guards.
In the drawings, a is a carrier or frame of metal, cardboard, Wood, or other suitable material. It is provided With a fly catching or destroying surface or coating h, adapted to lure flies to their destruction. This surface or coating may be applied to a suitable backing and then placed in the frame or carrier, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, or it may be applied on the carrier or frame, substantially as shown in Fig. 4, the object being to have the frame or carrier support the fly catching or destroying coating.
c are guards fastened to said frame or carrier preferablyat or near it edges and arched over or otherwise caused to overlie the coating or surface b and disposed so as to form a protection above said surface, substantially as shown. These guards may comprise Wires or strips and maybe permanently secured to the frame and to each other, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, orthey may be hooked to the frame or carrier, for example, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, 8, and l0, and combined With a clip, as CZ or d', Figs. 9 and 10, in which case, by the release of the clip, the guards may be folded or knocked down for convenience of transportation. As shown in Fig. 11, the feet c of the guards c are detachably adapted to sockets e, so that the guards may be removed entirely, When desired-for example, for purposes of shipment. As shown in Figs. 5 and 8, the ends f of the Wires which form the bottom of the frame or carrier are carried above the edges of the latter and provided With eyes, into Which the feet of the guards hook. As shown in Fig. 4, the guards are provided With fiat faces g at their feet, which faces are secured to the carrier or frame, to which the iiydestroying surface is applied. These faces may of course be caused to adhere in a variety of Ways. As shown in Fig. 6, they are provided with fingers f', that may be inserted and bent like an ordinary paper-fastener. However, these faces may be fastened by means of an agglutinant.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modi fications may be made in details Without de parting from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set IOO forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a carrier or frame provided with a fly catching or destroying surface or coating, and guards having their respective ends attached to said frame preferably at or near its opposite edges and having their intermediate portions arched over and raised above said surface or coating, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a carrier or framei provided with a fly catching or destroying surface or coating, and guards having their respective ends detachably attached to said frame preferably at or near its opposite edges and having their intermediate portions arched over and raised above said surface or coating, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a carrier or frame provided With a iy catching or destroying surface or coating, guards having their hooked to said frame preferably at or near its opposite edges and having their intermediate portions crossed and arched over and raised above said surface or coating, and a clip engaging the crossed intermediate portions of said guards, Wires or strips, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two Wit- DGSSQS.
