APPARATUS FOR APPLYlNG HEAT T THERMO BATTERIES SEEGIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 585,229, dated June 29, 1897.
Appliostionfiledhlaylii,1896. Serie1llo.591,733. on; model-i To (tZZ whmn it may cancer/1,: I
Beit known that I, HARRY O. REAGAN, J 1'. a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a negvnnd useful Improvement in Apparatus for Applying is heated from any source and the other cooled there will arise a difference of potential electromotive force, and thus acurrent of elec tricitywill be caused to flow, the metals or-" diuarily employed being antimony and hismuth, although many others are affected in Referring to the drawings, A designates shell of a locomotive or other boiler, the same having mounted thereon the thermo-bettery B and its adjuncts, the same consisting of the thermocouples O and D, which are made of any suitablezpeir of metals, as antimony end bismuth, and ere properly assembled and insulated, the inner junctions of said couples ples, Water being conducted into said jacket through the branch F, which leads from the feed-pipe G, which latter is connected with an injector H, which may be of usual com struction and under the control of thelengi l 'neer,'said pipe G in the present instance leading to the jacket H, which surroundslthe' 19,, merino-batteries Lirhich are constructedgbi the dissimilar elements K and L, the innerjunctions ofwhich lettercre heated bytheir contact with the smoke-stack M, whiletheir outer junctions are cooled by said water- 7 5 the saline-way.
'The-object of the present invention is to utilize what is co-day considered as lost heat and to provide means for applying said heat to thermo-betteries of the character above re ferred to, the heat ordinarily lost being thus efiectively utilized, while the source or heat radiated maybe thestean1pipe, steam-boiler, or stack, suitable means being provided, as a water-j scket or other equivalent device, for coolingtheexterior of the thermocouples. It fnrtherconsists of novel details of construction, all es will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents at sectional view of a. series of thermo-bzitteries applied to the body, stack, and smoke-box of e locomotive-boiler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a. horizontal section on line a: x, Fig. 1, showing' the relative position of the thermo-couples to the'source' of host, which inthe present 4o instance is the stack. Fig.8 represents a vertical sectional view of eportion of a stack or chimney into which hot geses'or products of combustion are conducted, showing also a series of thermocouples located thereinand 45 means for cooling the exterior of the same. Fig. 4 represents ahorizpntel section on line 'y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents aside elevation of a portion of a locomotive-boiler and I a steemmein or outlet-pipe, showing the thermocouples mounted thereupon. 4 similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts-in thoscvcral figures.
25 of the'above parts being' indicated-in Fig. '2".
N designates apipe or conduit leading from the jacket H tothe jacket P, which surrounds the thermocouples Q, which Zero of the same 8 construction as has been. hereinbefor, described, the said jacket Pand the couples Q- surrounding the spioke-box of'the boiler A, whereupon it will be seen that practically'all v the heat units which are ordinarily wasted'85 or lost through radiation aireby myin'vontiptt utilized... I l 7;
R designates a, pipe leading from the jacket H to the interior of the boiler, while the pipe. i -'S serves as an Outletpipefor conduoting'the 9p woter'ircm the interioroiitiicjacketii'tosaidz pipe P. or to the interior of the bbilei itthns being evident that the 'water-jec e ployod serve as feed-wetor'heaters j T and U designate conductors leadingfirom .1 5 opposite poles of the thermocouples and nected with a lamp V, or it is evident-g flint the same mey he connectcd'withja sterbgeji battery, if so desired. 1 a
' It will he evidentthat in place of utilizing? {on the radiated heet irom the stack M theheat radiated from-ccteehi-msin or on t-let-pipeW may be utilized, es shown in Fig. 5, siudmain, having mounted thereuponthethermofcou jacket H, as is evident,'the relative position 1 i v through the pipe B.
house or roundhouse, or fora storage battery' pies Z A, whose inner junctions able, it being apparent bear upon said steam-pipe, while their outer junctions are provided with a cooling-jacket Y, the cooling mediumbeiug conducted thereiuio through the pipe D and flowing therefrom Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, 'C' desig nates a stack through which products of cont bustion are discharged from any suitable source, as indicated by the arrows, said stack haying located tl egein the thernio-couples G, which have their outer junctions 11 located within the tank or water-jacket F, which stir-- rounds the aforesaid stack, while their inner junctions J are located in the path of the said products of eombust ion and thereby subjected to the heatthereof, said heat alsoentering the pockets E, formed in said couples.
KT designates an inlet-pipe, whereby a cool ing fluid is conducted to the jacket F, said cooling fluid having its exit through the dis-' charge-pipe L. l
M and N designate a series of conductors which are connected to the proper opposite poles of the thermocouples, and may lead by the proper connections to the lamp P or to a storage battery Q, as will be evident from Fig. 4'.
The operation will now beapparent to those skilled in the art, the -application of, the heat ordinarily lost by radiation to the inner junctions of the thermo-couples and the applicaiion of the cooling device to the outer junctions of said couples causing a current of electricity to flow, the same being utilized for lighting purposes, as in and around an engineor any other similar purpose as may be desir that the heat ordi narily wasted is effectively utilized.
It will be evident that I- may make the thermos in sections, so that the same may be read ily applied to or removed from a locomotive or the stack or smoke-box thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- a pipe leading 1. The ion with locomotive boiler, carry a stack and s o c box, of a therIno-battery surrounding smoke-box, a-wate1'-jacket surrounding ..:;l battery, a connection inter.- mediate said pumping device and waters jacket and an overflow or outletfor the latter.
2. The combination with a locomotiveboiler, carrying a pumpingdevice and having a smoke box and stack at its forward end, of therino-batteries,surrounding said smoke box and'stack, and having their inner junctions in contact therewith, water-jackets surroundin g each of said batteries and in contact with the latter, a pipe intewnediate said jackets, from one of the latter to the boiler, and a jackets and said pumping device.
3. The combination with a boiler of a thermo-battcry surrounding a suitable portion of the latter and adapted to be heated by the gases which ordinarily are wasted, a waterjacket surrounding said battery, means for forcing water-into said ckct, and means for conducting the heated water from said jacket to the interior of said boiler, said jacket thus serving the function of a feed-water heater.
4. The combination with a locomotiveboiier having a pumping device thereon, of therino-batteries mounted on the smoke-box, stack, and body ofv said boiler, water-jackets surroundin g said thermos and'in communication with each other, a connection from said pumping device to one of said jackets, and a connection from one of the latter to the interior of the boiler said jacket thus serving as feed, water heater.
0. TiTh e euunbination" with a locomotiveboiler provided with a smoke-box, of a thermo-battery surrounding said smoke-box, a cooling device surrounding said battery, and means for causing a circulation through said device.
