FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,023, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed March 10, 1897. Serial No. 626,822. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. OLEMENrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Centre Hall, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and
' I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, 1
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fences; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same, by which I produce a very strong and durable fence, not liable to be raised from the ground, and in which there will be no liability of the posts being pulled out of the ground or lifted out with frost.
.The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail views.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a post securely held in the ground.
In front of this post is another post 2, against,
the lower end of which rests an inclined bracebar 3, the upper end of which rests against the upper end of the post 1. This brace-bar 3 is also braced by an inclined bar 4.
The numeral 5 designates wires secured to bar 2 and passing around the post 1.
Mounted in brackets 7, passing through post 1, provided with a coiled spring 7 is a vertical rod 8, provided with a number of rollers 9, corresponding with the number of strands of the fence, to which said strands or horizontal wires are secured. These rollers are formed with clutches l0,whicl1 engage with corresponding stationaryclutches 12 on the said rod, the object of which is to prevent backward turning of the rollers.
The numeral 13 designates the horizontal wires or strands, which may be of any number desired, three being shown in the present instance. These wires are connected with vertical metal stays 14, having triangular tongues at their side edges, which are bent around said wires.
The numeral 15 designates wooden stays formed with inclined slots 16,with which said wires engage. These stays alternate with the metal stays and are provided intermediate to their ends with brackets 17, provided with pulleys 18, over which passes a brace-wire 19. This wire intermediate to said stays is connected by a rod with an anchor 21, embedded in the ground, which holds the stays in position and also holds the fence to the ground. The brace-wire is secured in one end to a roller 23, provided with a clutch member 24, engaging with a stationary clutch 25, similar to the rollers and clutches before described. The object of these rollers and clutches is to tighten the said wires.
The horizontalwires are secured at the opposite end to a rod 26, connected by rods 27 with a post 28. These rods 27 are provided with springs 29. The post 28 is braced by vertical and inclined brace posts or bars 30, 31, and 32, and post 30 is connected with post 28 by means of a twisted wire 34, passing around the posts.
A fence constructed as above will be found very strong and durable in use, as the strain exerted by the wires has a tendency to hold the fence to the ground and prevent the posts from pulling out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a fence the combination with the end posts, the brace posts and bars, and the twisted wires connecting said posts and bars, of the spring-brackets connected with one of said fence-posts, the rod secured thereto, the rotatable rollers having clutches, the stationary clutches, the fence wires or strands connected with said rollers, the alternate metal and Wooden stays, the rod connected with the other fence-post, the springs, the brackets secured to said Wooden stays and provided with rollers, the brace-wire passing around the same, the anchors, the rods connected therewith and with said brace-wires and the rods connecting said anchor-rods and the lower fence-wire, substantially as described.
