B. BAILY.
TOY 0R PUZZLE.
Patented June 22, 1897.
ia W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EGBERT BAILY, OF NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY OR PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,915, dated June 22, 1897.
A li ti fil d January 2, 1896. Serial No- 5'74,1'78. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EGBERT BAILY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys and Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toys or puzzles, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to entertain and amuse children as well as those of mature years.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective plan view of my improved toy or puzzle; Fig. 2, alongitudr nal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a transverse section onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing which is preferably about six inches long, three inches wide, and two inches deep, and which is composed of a bottom A, sides B, and end pieces 0, and which is also provided with a glass top or cover D.
At one end of the box or casing is a partition-plate E, which is provided at about the center thereof with a circular hole or opening F, and at one side and at the bottom thereof with a semicircular hole or open in g G.
Supported within the box or casing, near the end opposite the partition E, is a transverse rod K, on each end of which is mounted a tube or bearing L and between which is supported a leg M, which is pivotally connected with the rod K and the lower end of which is provided with a foot m, and formed in the bottom A and centrally thereof is a groove 0, which extends from a predetermined point adjacent to the partition E to and beneath the rod K, and said groove beneath the rod K is deeper than at the other end and the depth thereof gradually decreases in the direction of the partition E. I also employ a ball or spherical body P, which is composed of cork, hollow rubber, or similar material, and which is adapted to roll in the groove 0 5 and the solution of the puzzle will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement.
The box or casing is manipulated so as to cause the ball or spherical body P to enter the groove 0 and to roll down therein in the direction of the foot 177. of the leg M, and then by a quick movement of the box or casing the pivoted leg M or the foot thereof is caused to strike the ball and to drive it in the direction of the opening F in the partition E; and the object is to cause the'said ball or spherical body to pass through the opening F in said partition. This solution is difficult, but may be accomplished by the exercise of care and skill in the manipulation of the device; and my invention is not limited to the exact form ofthe box or casing, or to the various parts or elements connected therewith and the location thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations in and modifications of the construction herein described as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to, secure by Letters Patent- In a puzzle, a combination consisting of a casing, having a transparent cover secured thereon, a transversely-extending partitionplate near one end of said box, being in width equal to the depth of the same, said partition having a circular opening in the central portion thereof, and a semicircular holder in the bottom thereof, a transversely-extending rod in the end of said casing opposite to said partition, tubes mounted on either end thereof, a leg pivotally connected to the central portion of said rod and having a foot on the lower end thereof, said casing having a longitudinally-extending groove of graduated depth having its deepest end at end of easing opposite said partition in its bottom portion and passing under said leg, said foot being adapted to fit in the groove and a spherically-' shaped ball of a diameter smaller than said circular opening, all of the said parts being combined substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 24th day of December, 1895.
EGBERT BAILY.
